    Default Failure to launch.....

I have been competing since 1980, most likely 70 or so contests. Last year I was going super great up until about Thanksgiving, then I said I am going to back off and rest a bit before I hit it hard at the start of the year. I wanted to compete this year.

January comes and I just can not get going on a good diet. I have even had a hard time being consistent in the gym. 5 days one week, 3 the next and then a whole week off has been the norm for the last 6 months.

I am in the Army and have had some courses and changing job duties, I also have a 8 and 9 year old kids at home and I hate to cut in to their time. They are only young once. I am 49 and I definitely want to get on a good run so I can be primed to do Master Nationals next year in the over 50 middles.

So does anyone have input on how they get started or over a hump when they are having a hard time. Thanks, Cal

Cal, here's my 2cents. This can be taking away from you at any moment. I have now missed 2 months without serious training because of this BS artery thing. Don't take anything for granted. There may not be a tomorrow. Thank you for serving your country from an Army Ranger.

I would start with getting back in the gym consistently. Then after thirty or sixty days start tweaking nutrition. Get back in there and start lifting so you can remember what you enjoy about it. Don't start the diet grind too soon. It's baby steps.

Take it from an fellow 50-something lifter, once you get back to the gym on an regular routine, you're appreciate it even more. Trust me, day to day stuff happens but the gym is one place WE can control.

Thank you all for the input so far. I have even had a few periods where I just did not train for months in the past but then I could "Flip the switch" and hit it hard. I just am having trouble finding the switch?

This has happened to me more than I would like it to. For me forcing training/diet makes me hate it and I stop for long periods. What usually works is I get training to be enjoyable again and slowly clean up my food choices. As the weeks pass I try and get more strict without making too many changes that could flip the switch off. Once I get into great shape the "addiction" is back.

Ever heard the expression "The truth shall set you free"? I have had some awesome workouts since I "Came out" on this thread?

My eating is better too, I cooked up a mess of chicken and made some old school tuna salad like I used to. Even cooked up some rubarb as my low cal late night snack. Thanks guys.

Well to update this......I feel like I am getting back in to "Off Season" shape. I still am only hitting the weights, haven't been able to squeeze in the cardio....but it will come. Everything is starting to feel tight again.

I have said for years, "Your muscles are like balloons....after you have made them it is sometimes just a matter of blowing them back up again".

    Thanks for the encouragement guys.

Funny I was thinking of updating this. One thing I am doing different....if I have time I just play around and hang out in the gym. I used to still think "I have to get THIS many sets in and only rest THIS amount of time in between sets" even when I didn't feel like being there. Now I just do whatever amount I feel like.....rest as long as I feel I need to and I am enjoying being there more.

I still feel "Fat" but what off season Bodybuilder doesn't? Plus I am only fat for me.....for the general population I am in AWESOME shape.

    Thanks Guys.
