Defeating Mr. Olympia.....By: John Hansen
Defeating Mr. Olympia
“The wolf on the hill is not as hungry as the wolf climbing the hill.”
“That’s true, but when he wants the food, it’s there.”
– Quote from the movie “Pumping Iron”
Since its inception in 1965, there have only been 13 Mr. Olympia winners. It is a very elite company and once you are declared the King of Bodybuilding, it is not easy to be dethroned. In less than three months, Phil Heath will attempt to win his fourth Mr. Olympia title. Vegas money is on him doing it again. What would it take for someone to enter the contest and knock Phil off his throne? Let’s take a look at the history of the Mr. Olympia contest to see some of the more memorable examples of when the reigning champ was defeated by the hungry wolf climbing the hill.

I disagree with 1 aspect of the article -- Haney DID NOT beat Bannout, as the judges relegated him to 8th place. So, there were IN FACT 7 people who beat Bannout. That being said, the rest of the article is spot on, as Jay Cutler did handle Coleman, and Schwarzenegger handled Oliva.

Semantics...Lee was one of 7 that ALL beat Samir.
What about the other Mr. O defeats?
Arnold beating Zane.
Dexter beating Jay.
Jay Beating Dexter.
Still, great observations. I always enjoy anything penned by Mr. Hansen, thanks John!

Actually, Samir placed 6th that year so only 5 people beat him. To say it was the judges that defeated him, you could say that about any contest.
As for the other contests Triple-H, space restrictions limited me to including all of them. I was over 10 pages with the three stories I wrote about so I couldn't keep going. I wanted to write about Phil beating Jay, Dexter beating Jay, Arnold beating Zane, etc, but it would have been a tremendously long article.

Jay has the distinction of not only being the first man to recapture the title but also the first one to lose it twice.

Nobody was limiting the article length. I just didn't want to make it too long because I thought no one would read it if it was too long.

John, your stuff is interesting and well-written. Don't limit yourself, please!
There are too many "authors" on the various boards that shouldn't pen anything longer than a Twitter post...
We need more from the good ones!

Yeah, because Wolf has never been in the Top 3, no way he'll do it now.

I actually think that Dennis Wolf may be the most focussed of them all this year.I haven't seen or heard much about him lately which makes one think he's decided to get his head down and avoid distractons.

No way man.
MSUMAN as it right all the way… No way last year's 3rd place place finisher could possibly crack the top three!

Thanks John. As always most interesting and on point.
You can not barely beat a champ in a judged event. You must knock him/her out cold. Otherwise the judges take the easy way out and keep on keepin on.
Wolf should go ahead and get his calf implants and be done with it.MY MIND & BODY ARE AT ONE WITH MY POWER & STRENGTH............JM
