When the Olympia was at the Mandalay Bay (and as recently as the 2008 O) there WERE big ass billboards and such advertising the O.
Pro Bodybuilding will NEVER be mainstream.
Why?
Simple.
Bodybuilding is the kind of activity that is only fun or (for the most part) interesting if one is involved in the lifestyle.
It's not like a real sport where people root for teams, towns, cities, things they've loved since childhood. I love bodybuilding, but there's NOTHING exciting about the competition after the first little while. Except in some circumstances, there are no miracle comebacks....99% of the time, prejudging tells the whole story.
There are no last minute drives, clutch 3-pointers or bottom of the 9th grand slams for the win.
Let it go...bodybuilding will never be mainstream. It came close in the 80s with the fitness boom...it's over.

This is what Dave was referring as some kind of choreography for the bodybuilders at the olympia to make it more mainstream with more personality.

And as far as audience participation goes...the audience is TIRED.
The advent of 37 different categories and classes makes it impossible to maintain any kind of enthusiasm.
Nobody cares...even family. They come to support their loved one and then leave.
The rest of us (with no family in the show) usually don't even attend because we don't want to sit through 4 hours of Beach Body Bull*hit to see actual bodybuilding.
Again...no great mystery there, either.

lol Rich stated he was just asking. I know a jab when I hear one.
"Does he even belong in this conversation?"
Obvious dig or jab.
Chris Aceto, 1989 Collegiate Mr. America
Squat 500 x 12, bench 500 x 2... Aceto belongs in any conversation.
To the question "do anabolic steroids alter a person's mind?"
Scientists have attempted to test the association between anabolic steroids and aggression by administering high steroid doses or placebo for days or weeks to human volunteers and then asking the people to report on their behavioral symptoms. To date, four such studies have been conducted. In three, high steroid doses did produce greater feelings of irritability and aggression than did placebo, although the effects appear to be highly variable across individuals. In one study, the drugs did not have that effect. One possible explanation, according to the researchers, is that some but not all anabolic steroids increase irritability and aggression. Recent animal studies show an increase in aggression after steroid administration.
In a few controlled studies, aggression or adverse, overt behaviors resulting from the administration of anabolic steroid use have been reported by a minority of volunteers.
In summary, the extent to which steroid abuse contributes to violence and behavioral disorders is unknown. As with the health complications of steroid abuse, the prevalence of extreme cases of violence and behavioral disorders seems to be low, but it may be underreported or underrecognized.

Dave mentioned Quadzilla. Sadly, the above report notes, "that some users might turn to other drugs to alleviate some of the negative effects of anabolic steroids. For example, a study of 227 men admitted in 1999 to a private treatment center for addiction to heroin or other opioids found that 9.3 percent had abused anabolic steroids before trying any other illicit drug."
Could DeMayo's heroin addiction have been encouraged by his steroid use... a gateway drug?

i agree, and i hope im not misinterpreting what you are saying but when you say beach body bull you are alluding to the mens physique and bikini. As bodybuilder's we are interested in comparing our physiques to similar physique or to get blown away by a guy with freak genetics who obviously worked his ass off " as spectators that is". Unfortunately i go to a local show and wait from 6 to 10 just to see BB classes get up on stage now.
I would argue that other than financial incentive it is not in the recreational body builders best interest fot the sport to go mainstream. As debated this would bring about government/Olympic sporting regulations as well as an focus on the physique classes.

In terms of psychological effects of the drug, they are controllable. They do not alter cognitive ability, cause loss of inhibition and Impaired judgement such as depressants, barbiturates and amphetamines . I would argue the risk is like Dave said down and if you take responsibility and acknowledge this you are not harming anyone.
