Virtual Trauma is Rx Muscle's October 2014 Member of the Month!

Virtual Trauma has been a member of the Rx Muscle Forums since the very beginning – February 9, 2009 (member 387), has 447 posts (quality over quantity), and is a welcomed contributor to the Powerlifting section! Thank you for taking part in the forums as the October 2014 Member of the Month! Let’s learn more about this powerlifter, Emergency Physician, and Naval Reservist!

    Q: Height and weight?

    A: 5’9”, 190 lbs.

Q: How did you learn about Rx Muscle Forums?

A: I joined the Rx Muscle forums during the move from… a previous forum.

Q: What’s your favorite part of Rx Muscle Forums?

A: Muscle Central, Powerlifting, Nutrition & Fat Loss, and Rx Off Topic.

Q: What would you do to improve the site in general and the forums in particular?

    A: No suggestions.

Q: How were you introduced to the weights?

A: I started lifting for football and wrestling in high school.

Q: What is your favorite part of the iron game – strongman, bodybuilding, Men’s Physique, Bikini, etc.?

A: Powerlifting! I’m new to the powerlifting game but I love it! It’s objective in that you have a total at the end of the cycle. Did your total go up? Did your individual 1RM go up? Did you do more reps at a given weight? It’s very easy to judge your improvement. I also love the camaraderie. It’s not unheard of for a record holder to shout encouragement to another lifter who’s attempting to break their record! I love that!

Q: You offered the Lilliebridges, Brandon Lilly, Dan Green, Andrey Malanichev, Benni Magnusson as athletes you follow… what other powerlifters or competitors do you find especially motivational?

A: So many! Sam Byrd, Richard Hawthorn, Garrett Griffin, Pete Rubish, and the list goes on.

Q: What's your favorite thing about bodybuilding?

A: I love the bodybuilding lifestyle. Eat right, exercise, take care your body and mind.

Q: What's your least favorite thing about bodybuilding?

A: I think the “mass at all cost” has diminished the aesthetics and symmetry of the athletes. In my humble opinion.

Q: What is your goal so far as the weights go?

A: My long-term goal is still an “elite” masters total in powerlifting.

Q: And your short-term goals? How far are you from striking distance to those masters numbers?

A: I have a long way to go. I hit my goal for the year last month but since then I’ve been plagued by injuries so I’ve had to slow down. An interesting addition to the equation is training for the Navy PRT (physical readiness test). I have to run and keep my weight lower than I’m used to. I’m still trying to figure out how to balance everything.

Q: Do you have any favorite bodybuilders or strength athletes?

A: Arnold! And Frank Zane. I loved his look. Was he a mass monster? Of course not, but he had an aesthetic that has not been matched since his Mr. Olympia wins in the 70s. For powerlifting, the greatest of all time, Ed Coan! He’s a hero of mine, 51 years old and still lifting with a total hip replacement. I also follow the Lilliebridges, Brandon Lilly, Dan Green, Andrey Malanichev, Benni Magnusson, and many others.

    The legendary Ed Coan!

Q: Did you emulate anyone when you first became involved in the iron game?

A: Arnold! I read all of his books, I watched all of his movies, I read every article in M&F. He was my hero when I was growing up.

Q: Any idea how many times you’ve watched Pumping Iron? And have you check out Generation Iron yet?

A: 20 times? That’s a rough guess. I haven’t watched Generation Iron yet. On the topic of documentaries, everyone should check out Power Unlimited (yes, It’s about powerlifting!)

Q: Who is someone you look forward to meeting and perhaps picking their brain?

A: Mark Bell. He’s a very interesting person and an outstanding coach.

Q: Have you ever picked up his magazine, Power?

    A: I have a subscription!

Q: What has been the most effective workout you’ve followed?

A: For bodybuilding, I followed the Max OT plan with excellent success. For powerlifting I’ve made the most consistent progress with Jim Wendler’s 531.

Q: What supplement company or brand does it right?

A: Species! Isolyze is by far the best tasting whey protein on the market and I don’t seem to have any GI issues as I do with other brands.

Q: Do you have a favorite TV show?

    A: The Walking Dead.

    Q: Are you a moviegoer?

A: I don’t get out to movies very much, but I’m an avid Netflix-er!

    "Prrrrrooooteeeeiiiiin!!!!"

Q: What are three things you couldn't live without?

    A: Family, friends, my gym.

Q: What is your macro or food breakdown? Do you count calories, do calculations, and weigh your food?

A: Right now I’m following Dave’s Keto diet to cut some body fat for my Navy Reserve PRT test. I don’t weigh my food, I just portion consistently and make alterations as needed.

Q: Other than hitting the iron, what do you enjoy doing the most with your free time?

A: I enjoy shooting and marksmanship. There is an excellent combat shooting academy in Arizona where I train a couple of times a year, the Gunsite Academy.

Click the image to visit their website!

And I try to visit my local range several times a month to keep my skills up.

Q: Care to name a few of your guns? My first ribbon in the Navy was for marksman. You needed a 150 and I scored 152. lol

A: Navy Marksman! Zulu Bravo Curt! For handgun I shoot a Sig Sauer p226. I also have an AR-15 and a bolt-action rifle that I use for long distance shooting.

Q: Very cool. Can you say anything about your occupation?

A: I’m an Emergency Physician. I also have a PhD in Physiology although the majority of my time is spent in clinical practice.

I joined the Navy reserve because I’ve always wanted to serve but when I was younger they wouldn’t take me due to my eyesight and shoulder problems (I have a big metal screw in my shoulder from an injury). But now that I’m a practicing Emergency Physician with years of experience, they were more than willing to give me a waiver to fill a current need for physicians.

I love that I get to take care of ready reserve sailors and Marines who have and will continue to serve our country. I also hope to deploy when my training is finished, but we’ll see what’s happening in the world next year.

Q: What about hobbies or pets?

    A: Two cats.

Q: Names? And are they sweethearts or demon felines? I’ve had both variations. :-D

A: Zane and Zoe. They’re still kittens so they’re a bit on the rambunctious side.

    Q: What frustrates you?

A: The lack of personal responsibility and self respect. Life is what you make of it. Take the initiative, stop blaming others for your failings, and put in the work to improve your life and the lives of the others around you.

Q: Amen. And happiness is a choice. People often complain about things that just seem so trivial. I guess I’m as guilty as anyone on that count.

    What motivates you?

A: Fear of failure. If you fail to train, you train to fail. That won’t be me if I can help it!

Awesome. Thank you for sharing part of your story. Looking forward to reading about you hitting your powerlifting goals and, of course, to more of your posts, VT.
