In a story first reported by KLAS-TV in Las Vegas with details later provided by TMZ Sports, former baseball player Jose Canseco shot himself in the left hand while cleaning his handgun at home in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

According to TMZ Sports, Canseco blew the middle finger off his hand. Canseco's fiancee told TMZ Sports he was sitting at a table in their home cleaning the gun when it went off, apparently not knowing the gun was loaded.

Canseco was in surgery Tuesday night, with doctors reportedly saying he will never have full use of what is left of his finger again.

Canseco, 50, made a name for himself as a slugger for the Oakland Athletics but later was essentially blackballed by MLB for writing a tell-all book detailing steroids use in the game, including his own illegal use of performance-enhancing drugs during much of his career.
