Aside from contest coverage, which you can get online, is there really any advantage to 12 smaller issues vs 10, or even 4? I might think that keeping more of a presence on newstands could be a consideration, but I know that I've personally had a few titles that only come out quarterly, but I know they'll always be worth the wait.

MuscleMag was originally a quarterly. Thick as a phone book. Well, not quite, but it was a hefty edition.

Unsolicited trivia: Anyone familiar with Smith will recognize him as someone who would have agreed with the IIFYM approach. I remember reading his comment that a Coke and a burger holds the same calories as any so-called clean food.
