Question Who Do You Compete Against in the Gym?

Is the gym a competitive environment for you? Do you compete against your personal best? Do you visualize someone to compete against while training? Is the gym a battleground for you? Just wondering what your mind set is.

I try to compete against my last workout personal best. Every session, I feel different based on that day's sleep (night before), stress, energy level, & mental readiness. I try to adjust to that while still making gains, even small ones, in reps, weight, or length of time for cardio or stretching. But I'd like to know what others have found useful.

I try to get pissed off at people sometimes. Like today someone was in a rack that I was thinking about doing since yesterday. Im on my last excersise and im watching that rack and right as I finish my last set some mf er takes the rack Im super pissed lol. In normal life im calm i would see the logic of the situation and move on but this is the gym my sancuary where i do What I want F other people. i use this anger as fuel. i happen to go right next to the rack to do something similar all the while pissed and guess what i think i hit a PR or close to it. As I was done i wasnt pissed any more and just excited cuase it was a great workout and that was it.

The gym is my place to unload and decompress. I take all my aggression out on the weights so that I don't take it out on my husband and kids. I also try to beat my log book every time I train.

I compete against myself to push myself to new limits on a daily basis and continue to improve on any aspect possible. Weather its more weight, more reps, more time under tension, or improving my mental mindset to train regardless of how little sleep i may of got.

For a while, everytime I've tried to compete with myself (or former self) something gives so I've changed just about everything in my workouts bringing in new and different exercises, movements, rep counts and ranges, different intensity levels, workout duration, stretching and a lot of trigger point therapy I'm not competing with myself or anyone ,everything being completely new. Hopefully it will work and get me back to where I can lift hard heavy and be brutal competitive with myself again without getting injured.

mindset always changed when i walked into the gym or even trained at home. i didnt think about anything really. it seemed almost like a blur during and hard to remember everything when i left. when i walked in the gym my muscles started to fill and pump on their own. then once i started it was pure adrenaline. no plan other than a muscle group and start heavy. i was competing for my life i think haha.

Generally I've always gone in w/ the mindset of 1) getting into the zone and 2) increasing something relative to my last visit or the last time I did that particular day's workout (typically the previous week) - more reps, stronger reps, more weight, better form, variation on the grip... whatever it was - just make some sort of incremental improvement from the last time. The "getting into the zone" consists of two parts - a) great music on the ipod -- typically the same stuff that has rocked me since the 80s; and b) mind/muscle connection, thorough focus on the weights, the form the push or pull, etc. Very zen.

More recently since I'm suffering the wear & tear of time, I still go in trying to match or increase the previous workout, but I'm also thankful if I can do it w/o something hurting, getting strained, etc. I also consider it a "zen" day if I don't have to interrupt my cadence to wait for the eqpt to open up. Lately that hasn't been happening and it really kills my momentum and pisses me off to no end - esp when it's shit like dumbbell within +/- 15 lb of my target weight is missing or some dipfuck is using the eqpt for something stupid (like curling in the squat rack).

Anyway, aside from the stupid stuff like above, I still love when I can fall into that moment of great music, great lifts, great zen.

I will never be the biggest, most muscular guy in my Gym though, not my goal.
