Scale with BF measurer
I was thinking about getting one of those scales with bodyfat measurer incorporated for COG as she preps for July. Do you guys think it could be somewhat helpful to gauge her progress?

I've always been under the impression that the mirror is the best guide, but others may disagree. That being said, it probably wouldn't hurt.

The devices in those scales are highly inaccurate and inconsistent. I have tried them, never got a consistent reading even though I can nail a diet like nobody's business. Save your money.

These DO NOT measure body fat, they measure how much water you carry. Look up bioelectrical impedance analysis. These scales and the hand-held body-composition devices are widely inaccurate. Try this, get a base-line measurement then drink 32 ounces of water and measure again. The difference will vary greatly.

Exactly !
If you really want to test your body fat use the old way : the caliper. It works, if you keep the same spot and are consistent. It will show you a pattern of progression.
However you don't need any body fat measurement, as long as you are not blind, you see your progression with the mirror and pics. If you're fat than i guess you're fat, the judges don't use a caliper to measure your body fat onstage…

I'm saying they cannot provide even a "somewhat" consistent pattern from one week to the next. One day I was 8%, then next day I was 29%...the day after that 12%...at the exact same time of the day each time, on the exact same diet every day, every meal timed to the minute...all one week out from my show, when Dave Pulcinella clipped me at 6.2%.
Oh, and the day after Dave clipped me at 6.2%, I walked into my gym and tried one of those hand-held devices: 19%. Bhahahahaha!
Buy a good set of calipers with the money you would use on that fancy scale, they don't need to be a great set. Learn how to use them so you get very consistent with them. Calipers plus tape measure plus mirror plus scale will give you a good indicator week to week.2016 RX Member of the Year & March 2015 Member of the Month

I have one, and I think the calculus they use in this measurements is the issue.
1st, they use BMI as a major factor.... which is grossly inaccurate for a measure of healthy bodyweight as it doesn't account for muscle mass. I'm considered overweight by it... something no one looking at me would ever claim... I'm 6'3" and 215lbs.
The scale also measures BMR/Caloric requirement, visceral fat, lean muscle mass %, and BF%. It also measures your "metabolic age"..... I'm 45, but my metabolic age is 67.
The most accurate calculation is the actual scale itself... everything else must be taken with a grain of salt.

mirrors can fool you...even at my gym there are mirrors taht make me look like a 212 offseason pro and others taht make me look like I never even lifted a weight in my life...plus the diet can get to your head and you lose good judgement and common sense. Bodyfat measurements can help keep you grounded in reality while you diet

As stated get calipers. You can get a good pair for under twenty bucks.
Do not get the ones that you click one spot and then read a chart.
You want a pair that reads in mm's and you take anywhere from three to nine spots. I've actually gotten good enough to do the three spot by myself. Obviously the more spots, the more accurate.
Here's a site with all the formulas for you. All you have to do is plug in the numbers.
