Is there a possibility of the body doing this in anticipation? Like the brain sending messages that kick start the thermic effect even before those calories you're putting in have begun to be utilised?

I would guess ripped people is because their metabolism got efficient at turning as furnace anything entering the body. Since it must be more and more efficient to use energy and balance the body temperature with fewer and fewer calories. (Using both fat oxidation and burning the carbs you gave too him).
As far as the obese people, well he has an extra "fur" / coat / layer of fat. He should be warmer even with less food than the guy who is ripped. But if he ate something, or move etc he got even warmer etc.

Whatever is in your mouth (food wise, salt wise, spices wise) at that time is already being analyze by your brain, your tongue captors are sending signals to your brain or what will be going inside you body i guess. So the brain send signals (various neurotransmitters and hormones) to react or to begin reacting accordingly to the food or element you are bringing.
Also the temperature of the food plays a role, or eating something liquid like hot water or hot sauce that can be absorb really quickly and change fast the way your body react (Rise in temperature, sweating etc)
I guess there are multiple ways the body will react to the food you bring. That's why being accustomed to eat certain meals at certain hours, with pretty bland food help not worrying about these effects and make easier the adjustment you could do to your diet.

Which is why I'm wondering if the body starts to mimic the thermic effect before the food is actually digested. As for the food temperature,I said in my first post, post number 2 or 3, that if the food was hot there was an obvious answer, hot food raises the internal temp and the sweating is a reaction to it.
