    Default Axioma Training Journal 2015

I'm 50, current NPC SC State Open bodybuilding champ. If that sounds the least bit pretentious...sorry! I am really, really proud of the fact that I won it at the age of 49 against some stellar competition.

I am currently training to guest pose June 20th, at the 2015 NPC SC State. My ultimate goal is Masters Nationals in July.

What I hope to offer with this training journal is some insight into what it takes for a 50 year old competitor to survive in this game. At the 50+ level, EVERYONE is beat up, scarred and broken in some way. It is about perseverance and transcendence at my age. I'm not a super strong guy, but strong enough to build 30+ lbs of muscle in my 40's. My walking around weight (non juice) went from 180 to 200.

I have degenerative disc disease, cervical bone spurs, torn labrum, sub scap, biceps tendon, peripheral neuropathy in elbow, CTS and torn tendons in wrist and suffer daily from 30 years of manual labor (deep tissue massage therapy and ART) with a hand that is either numb or screaming.

That's RIGHT now. Not going to get better until I retire from competition...which will be when I win a National Championship and get a Pro card.

    I hope you subscribe.

I'm in the process of mapping out training strategy right now in light of recent MRI's and consults. You will see my training unfold...right here on RX.

    Subbed!

I'm not far from 50 and can relate to your physical issues all too well.

Excited to see how your prep unfolds.

training for next week is strictly feel. I am still assessing hand limitations.

Leg training looked like this yesterday:

    Leg extensions: 4 x 20
    Seated leg curls: 4 x 15
    Hack squats: 4 x 20
    Dumbbell stiff legged deads: 4 x 15
    One legged presses: 4 x 12

    done.

Diet: Just eating good food brothers and sisters. I eat when I'm hungry which is every 3-4 hours. I eat 6-8 oz. protein, 250-300 grams carb, don't worry about fats.

    Cardio: no cardio.

    Matt,
Your instinctive training is very much like my own. At our age and having so many nagging issues it's much more productive than to stick to a strict regimen of training for several weeks on in. My diet philosophy is much like your own as well. I think once you know your body so well and how it reacts to different foods, cals, macros you develop a keen sense of what works for you and what doesn't.

This is something that I believe a lot of young bodybuilders can learn from this forum and approach to training. Not taking away from lots of these journals that map out their entire training phases methodically, weight their food, etc. These things are good but at some point one must learn their own body and how it feels then train and eat accordingly. Not preaching here, just subscribe to your thoughts about the best way to continue to improve even into our 40s and 50s.

Read this back on saw that this statement could be possibly misunderstood. When I prepare for a contest I do have phases for my dieting and pull and add calories as needed throughout these phases depending on what I look and feel like until I get to my desired look. Matt, my statement was more geared towards your overall approach to your instinctive training and your diet approach right now about getting enough protein and not weighing your foods at this point and listening to your body aches and pains and adjust your training however you can to continue to improve without risking further injury.

It is very different training at our age then it was when we were in our 20s and 30s. Matt, you have a very symmetrical and pleasing physique for the judges to look at. And if you can nail your condition like you did last year you should do VERY well at Masters Nats!
