Default Bingham sets Mr. Universe stage as goal

South Shields bodybuilder aims to muscle his way into Mr Universe

Stephen Bingham has qualified for the Mr Britain finals after winning an Over-50s Britain Bodybuilding event.

The 50-year-old, of Beaconside, South Shields, won the National Amateur Bodybuilders’ Association (NABBA) North Britain Over-50s bobybuilding contest at the weekend.

The victory means he’ll go to the Mr Britain contest in Southport next month in the hope of earning a coveted spot at Mr Universe.

The title is the second Stephen picked up in one week, after winning the Over-40s English Lakes Classic, in Cumbria, on Sunday, April 26.

Stephen, who trains every day at Market Health Spa, in South Shields, said: “I train for about an hour and a half every day, but the hardest part of preparing for a contest is the limited diet.

“It’s low calorie and high protein, so it doesn’t offer much variety.”

Stephen, a spraypainter on an astute submarine project in Barrow-in-Furness, has won NABBA contests on two previous occasions and is a former Mr England class winner and former runner-up of Mr British Isles, but he says this next contest is the big one.

He said: “I’m feeling quietly confident about the contest and hopefully I’ll be able to obtain a place in Mr Universe.

“It’s my boyhood dream to get there. I would just be ecstatic.”

Stephen has been bodybuilding for 32 years and competed in his first contest in 1984.

He added: “It’s a lifestyle, especially during the competitive season. Mr Universe is the real ultimate for bodybuilding.

“It’s quite hard to fit training around my job, I work seven days a week, so it is tough, but I’ve got a lot of support.

“I have to thank Rob Hills for helping me with my training and dietary needs over the last 30 years, and my wife Dawn for being so supportive.”

BODYBUILDER Stephen Bingham made his comeback after a 19-year absence from competitions – and scooped a top title.

Work has kept the muscular 44-year-old away from tournaments, but this year he found the time needed to dedicate himself to gruelling training.

His regime included working out for two hours a day, six days a week, at The Health Spa gym in Queen Street, South Shields, where he has been a member for 25 years.

He also kept to a strict, high protein diet, and hasn't touched alcohol since the start of the year.

But the hard work paid off when he entered the National Amateur Body-Builders' Association (Nabba) North Britain Championships, held in Hartlepool earlier this month.

He won the masters over-40s class, and will now go forward to the Nabba Britain finals in Southport, Merseyside, on May 30.

Mr Bingham, who lives with his fiance, Dawn Corbyn, in Beaconside, South Shields, said: "I was totally delighted.

"There were 90 competitors in the whole competition and the standard was really high.

"A lot of competitors were invited to the finals, which was unusual."

The spray painter, employed on the Astute submarine programme in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, took up body building in his late teens.

He did his first show when he was 19 and in his last contest, in 1990, he picked up the Mr England title.

"I never had the opportunity to compete again until this year," he said.

"The opportunity arose for me to be able to dedicate the time and training to the standard required."

In the years he has not competed, he has remained dedicated to his training and has never stopped bodybuilding.

"You have to develop the physique as a whole, because that's what the judging system is based on," he said. "It is purely visual.

"I have never struggled with motivation to train. I do believe if you continue to lead an active lifestyle, it does prevent the onset of ageing."

When the Nabba Britain finals are over, Miss Corbyn, 46, his partner of five years, is hoping to turn his attention towards their wedding next year.

She said: "Bodybuilding is his passion. He deserves the win because he puts in what it takes."

A BODYBUILDER who works at Barrow shipyard made a dramatic comeback after a 19-year absence from competitions by winning a top title.

Steve Bingham, a contractor who works as a paintsprayer on the Astute submarine programme, had kept his rippling 44-year-old body away from tournaments, but finally found the time to train again this year.

His regime, much of it conducted in Barrow, included working out for two hours a day, six days a week, a high protein diet, and an alcohol ban since Christmas.

It all paid off when he entered the National Amateur Body-Builders’ Association North Britain Championships, held in Hartlepool earlier this month. He won the masters over-40s’ class, and will now go forward to the Nabba Britain finals in Southport, Merseyside, on May 30.

He lives with his fiancée, Dawn Corbyn, in South Shields. He currently works a month in Barrow before getting home for a few days.

He has worked at the yard for two years and says he has found it a friendly town. He trains at the Furness Health Studio in Greengate Street. He said of his win: “I was totally delighted. There were 90 competitors in the whole competition and the standard was really high. A lot of competitors were invited to the finals, which was unusual.”

He took up bodybuilding in his late teens. He did his first show when he was 19 and in his last contest, in 1990, he picked up the Mr England title. Despite not competing for years, he did continue to train.

He explained: “You have to develop the physique as a whole, because that’s what the judging system is based on, It is purely visual.”

Mr Bingham thinks his passion also keeps him looking young. He said: “I have never struggled with motivation to train. I do believe if you continue to lead an active lifestyle, it prevents the onset of ageing.”

Tom Allen, personal trainer and manager at the Furness Health Studio, said: “Steve is a fantastic bloke who trains here ever night for two hours. He hasn’t competed for 24 years since he won Mr England, so to win a major title in the over-40s’ category is a fantastic comeback for him. It’s good for him and a good advert for the sport and for us. Bodybuilding’s popularity is definitely growing around here.”
