I'm not shitting on it but rather just saying that it's not something that I see profitable for my purposes. Your content is completely different than mine and it fits what you are doing. But it's not for everyone. I hope that you corner that market and make a million dollars doing so.
C'mon, John. Taking content off the web? I have more brains and integrity to never do that even if those shots would come out in print and not be pixilated. You're a photographer and know the difference between 300 and 72 dpi.
The Lee Priest cover was from a photographer that was present at the 2013 NABBA Mr. Pro Universe in Australia and my upcoming cover with Zack Khan is a studio shot that he provided. I don't have Blechy-type deep pockets, but have made enough contacts with people that can provide me the right material at the price I can afford.
Rob and Dana Linn have done an amazing job of marketing themselves with no help from the industry and now you see the covers that she is getting. And I agree that original content rules and that's why I am not following the lead of MD and FLEX and taking things to a different level with people that have the following and can speak their minds instead of giving the robotic standard text book answers to the same boring questions.
That is original content in this industry, which has basically been a repetition of itself since the 1960s (with the exception of the early days of Muscle Media 2000 and the Dave/John era of MD).

Of course I have seen long lines for Jay at expos over the years, but nothing that compares to what Piana had at the Arnold this past March. Not even close and the two videos that I brought up did in fact have him out and about with nary a selfie or autograph request. I'm not making that up; you can see for yourself in the two clips that have been out for about two or three years.
I'm not saying that no one cares about the NPC shows, but rather that the percentage of that group is a lot smaller than the one that would watch a Piana or Bostin Loyd YouTube clip. Just do the comparison and it's not even close.
Lee Priest hasn't competed in the IFBB in how many years and he still garners more attention than most of the IFBB pros. How many threads are Priest-related at MD? A shitload and he is "the enemy" over there. The guy is a magnet and he isn't even trying. He is on those Sam's Fitness videos, with my magazine and co-hosts Iron Mag's International Iron Radio with Geoff Roberts but doesn't plaster himself out there using his own social media.
And bodybuilding isn't dead, it's just different in that it's not all contests.
I never meant to insult anyone and give all of the people credit for putting the time and effort into competing. But it's a shame that the "payoff," if you will, is so little for them.

True statement! LOL. I can't tell you how many weird looks I got in the press box from other sportswriters when I was looking at my website and an oiled up dude wearing his 'bag of nuts' contest Speedo photo came up.
And these fat guys didn't appreciate the beauty of a woman with muscles, either, giving me even more shit when I would say it is hot.

I just don't see feeding off the celebrity of others however they make it an industry in itself, but a form of paparazzism. DLB & Rob work within a matrix of show promotion and through their good promotion and media production made something of nothing. The bad boys you are referring to in the majority of cases do it still closely related to the NPC & IFBB in not so much a commensal, but parasitic relationship if I might put it bluntly.
I've seen the long lines at expos for MMA fighters, soccer stars etc in Brazil, etc. If I was interested in covering those sports that would be interesting. I find the model of the success stories within the NPC & IFBB network most interesting to me though as like a sports scout I'm interested in learning how I can have a more learned role in developing new talent and learning from those who do it themselves. Controversy will always breed interest, but its not the only news value worth considering or including in one's business model.

Bodybuilding is something no one owns rather like football, but to play in the NFL or biggest bodybuilding federation one has to enter their shows compete on the NPC & IFBB stage. That said, anyone can do it including the guy I saw last weekend compete after losing 80lbs and he looked good. Huge crowd there to support him. A real bunch of cheerleaders.
The bodybuilding stage is a platform the same as comedy clubs, jazz bars and strip clubs have circuits and singers & performers the same. Bodybuilding as a business is as much about people putting into place a framework for individuals regardless of their body fat or muscle density to be able to get on stage and give their own muscle/lipid performance.
I see the alternative presented here as looking for whose hot via whatever means not looking for the outstanding bodybuilding performers, but for following whats hot in the ratings at the moment. Coattailing on their success. Lots of media do it. Has nothing to do with the actual connection those who love the art have with bodybuilding in all its various forms that people are drawn to for as much emotive self images concerns as to worry over score cards.Last edited by Musclepapa John; 05-27-2015 at 04:52 PM.

Ok....but let this marinate for a second. Kali Muscle isn't riding anyone else's coattails. I mention guys like him and CT Fletcher because I really feel that some of you are sleeping on how fast these guys are gaining celebrity. The people watching him and buying his clothes probably couldn't name two NPC competitors or more than one pro name.
They literally created their own market. Yes, there are people who just want to see huge muscles and learn from the guys that got them. They don't care if they ever competed or not.
I doubt most of CT Fletcher's fan base follows NPC shows. They go to him for motivation.
These guys are not riding coattails. They literally saw a gap in the market and filled it.
That gap was called "the lack of huge down to Earth fuckers with HUGE personalities and HUGE mouths".Last edited by Professor X; 05-27-2015 at 05:02 PM.

I totally get your analogy and don't dispute it, but want to throw another analogy into this just for the fuck of it. Yes, the IFBB is the world's biggest stage for the sport of bodybuilding and that is indisputable.
But using the NFL reference again, I look at the industry guys that I have been profiling are kind of like the former players who are now in the media as commentators on TV and radio. They still garner a lot of attention and promote themselves on social media more than the active players, and can be critical of the referees and league.

Right on, Joe. You nailed it. Kali etc. are entrepreneurs who market themselves & don't give a shit about what anyone else says. They have access to media & they don't need the organizations. Actually, Kali still has a competitive career but the others don't. They just have mojo & force of personality. Andy Warhol said (in the '60s) that everyone in the future would be famous for 15 minutes, & so far YT has extended that 15 to an unmeasurable length. But everyone has his sell-by date & it won't keep going indefinitely.
Meanwhile, the proliferation of pro card divisions, & pro card qualifications, has blurred the pro ranks. In the good old days when times were bad, it was just a handful of competitors that captured the attention of the fans. Shows were held at the local high school basketball court, or at the high school auditorium. I saw good shows at these auditoriums, including the Jan Tana Pro/Masters Olympia in 2002 (at a Lynchburg high school auditorium). Now we have to have classy venues, but these venues cost money--big money. The amateur bodybuilding circuit is a pro production, & people are expecting to not just break even but to make money from it. That means sponsorship, expos, & pro/ams. I'm down with all that, but promoters need to bring more to the table--& I'm not talking about off-season Michelin Men pros guest posing & selling autographs. We want to see the up & coming next generation of pros to be, whose national qualifications send them to the Junior USA or Junior Nats. Deliver that, & you will fill your seats.Last edited by hifrommike65; 05-28-2015 at 12:26 PM.

Thanks for the support. It's not the 'popular' mentality in this industry and as a whole because the competition aspect is still the one that garners the most attention from the media outlets that have been around the longest.
That's because it's good for them but not necessarily the best route for me to take business-wise, because I'll just be another magazine trying to jockey for position with the cards all stacked against me. So I am choosing to play with a different deck.

Analysis thus far:
Joe Pietaro, while verbose, loves the sport, isn't a douche and is becoming tolerable. I'll support his mag.
MPJ is a passive-aggressive douchebag, a connoisseur of awkward, perverse geriatric schmoeing and has just learned what paragraphs are.
Hifrommike is a schmoe and Davidcua is French.Last edited by Maniacal; 05-28-2015 at 12:05 PM.
