Northern Ireland body builder Jim Henderson has died suddenly in Malta less than 24 hours after competing in the World Championships.
Jim 54, is understood to have suffered a fatal heart attack in his hotel room yesterday evening.
He had just returned from having a meal with his daughter Nicole to celebrate Father’s Day and, having come sixth in the world had enjoyed food he normally denied himself.
His wife Kathy was on a flight home to Dublin when Carrickfergus man Jim passed away and will be making her way back to Malta tonight.
Jim, a manager at Bombardier Aerospace, told Belfast Live in May that the Malta competition would be his last because he wanted to dedicate more time to his wife and teenage children, Nicole, 18, and James, 16.
He said at the time: “This is a sport where you have to make sacrifices yourself but the people around you too make huge sacrifices in terms of time and all sorts of things, something as simple as sharing a meal together.”
Jim won the Masters Over-50 regional heat in the National Amateur Body Building Association competition in May.
After a long time contemplating whether he would bring his career to an end at the World Championship, he agreed with this wife and children that he would attend the British finals in June 6 and compete for the last time in Malta on Saturday June 20.
It is understood a postmortem will be carried out in Malta before Jim’s remains can be released to Kathy.
A statement on behalf of the Henderson family, said: “It is with unparalleled sadness that we have learned of the passing of James, a loving husband and father.
“James passed away in Malta where he had been competing in the world body building championships, representing Northern Ireland.
“While we deal with this devastating news, we the Henderson family and wider family circle, would respectfully request we are given the appropriate time and privacy to do so.”

I don't know anything about the guy except his age & his current look. He isn't hauling around 300 lb, but it's probably still a really, really good reminder of the consideration you have to give to a middle-aged body when you hit it w/ the extremes of BB competition.

This is straight away fucked up.
The guy dies on fathers day after having a special dinner with his daughter and family... I'm starting to think BBing real is a mental disorder after reading this and countless other stories like it. If it's not a mental disorder, then why do all of these hardcore bb's continue to kill themselves?
BTW, I think this dude was loaded based on his conditioning.

Don't know details about this guy, but generally it seems to be the sudden diuretic-caused stress on an aging body. Even an apparently strong & healthy person at 45+ years old, is just not operating w/ the body of the youthful days and you just have to be considerate of the structural integrity of the body's various systems.

He's not the first person ever to just die suddenly. Its only because he was a bodybuilder that the issue of drugs is coming up.He died suddenly just like a lot of others do whether via diuretics, recreational drugs or sexing some wild 19 year old bird. At least he got to see 54.

You're right. A friend dropped over at 37. He was 5'7", slim, looked like a healthy individual, was engaged to a friend. They were skiing and he had a massive heart attack and died. Cholesterol, medication didn't help. His family had a history of heart attacks.
And you have, too, if you think it's appropriate to discuss a possible cause of the man's death before he's cold. They said there would be an autopsy, so let's leave the speculation alone. Or not. You do you, right?Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Join Rx Muscle on Facebook!

Really? I had a friend die at the age 27 due to a heart attack. Dude was in his 50s. People die everyday of heart attacks in their 50s whether they workout or not.
You said you yourself are carrying around a lot of extra fat. That would make you insane for putting yourself at risk for the same...

Oh, and kids, if you want to be around longer, quit fucking with diuretics. They are a greater risk than any steroid.
