Sure controversy sells in the short term, it's a "cheap pop" however. I tell athletes all the time that they have to think of their brand in the big picture. Quality posts are better off in the long run. # of followers and views/likes are important but they should NOT be at the expense of their brand. Engagement is much more important than # of views/likes.
A lot of people are attracted to controversy in the same way that people can't take their eyes off a car crash but it doesn't always translate to sales and can hurt your brand in the long run.

Personally, I don't adhere to "any publicity is good publicity" theory.
That said, in today's ADD society, people are interested in controversial topics; they are attracted to the shock value. Not that this is any kind of long-term plan for longevity, just an observation.

Agreed, headlines just for the sake of headlines is not the best strategy.
You are right, people love the controversy but what's a guy like Bostin going to do when people get bored of him (which I think they already are), people will just move on to the next controversial person.
It's not good for the long term viability of your brand whether that be your personal brand as an athlete or a company who engages in controversy.
The other thing is that some of the controversial people are clearly doing it purposely and it doesn't come off as genuine, it feels and looks contrived and that attention won't last as people can see through it.

Precisely, Shock and controversy is like a drug, after a while you need a bigger hit to feel high.
Yes, B-Loyd is losing his shock value, I believe he has less staying power than Rich Piana. That being said, it's the combination of shock value/controversy and personality that provides the most staying power.
The other thing that factors in is the hunger factor; once you make it big i.e., you become a multimillionaire and rather content, you lose passion and drive. This results in coming across as in-genuine or inauthentic compared to your former self...it's all a vicious cycle. Those with the most appealing personality and ability to provide controversial shock content, are those who stay relevant in this stimulation crazed society.
That was the basic recipe behind Howard Sterns success, but no one is immune from becoming "played out" in the game of entertainment, which is what bodybuilding is primarily.

Bostin is now getting into the gay porn game. Ironically, I think he'll find a lot of staying power there as a promoter well past his "prime" in the bb world.
