Older generations should pump iron
Champion bodybuilder encourages older generations to pump iron

As a raft of athletes descend on Cairns for the Great Barrier Reef Masters Games, a former world champion bodybuilder is encouraging all older people to get into the gym and start lifting weights.
Champion bodybuilder Kim Knott (see attached)
Kim Knott now lives in Weipa on far north Queensland's Cape York Peninsula. In Cairns as the guest of honour for the Great Barrier Reef Masters Games bodybuilding competition, Mrs Knott said it is never too late to start looking after your body. "Once you get to a certain level it becomes easier to maintain," she said. "It all comes down to great nutrition, sleeping well ... and trying to be kind to your body - that's what gives you results."
Some people might baulk at the thought of spending an hour lifting weights, let alone doing it five or six days a week.
But for former world champion bodybuilder Kim Knott, hitting the gym is about ensuring she lives a long and healthy life.
"As you get older it becomes more important to look after not just your fitness but your health and wellbeing," Mrs Knott said.
"Don't get me wrong, I like to look hot and sexy in a little black dress as well but now it's more about longevity and feeling fit and healthy for as long as possible."
Having won a swathe of Australian and international bodybuilding titles, she is no stranger to hard work but Mrs Knott said not everybody needs to take their fitness as far as her.
"I took it to the next level because it was something I was passionate about," she said.
"Not everybody wants to be a bodybuilder but you can improve the way you look and the way you feel and just make a difference to your everyday life.
"It's never too late to start."
As her trophy cabinet and sculpted physique might suggest, Mrs Knott believes pumping iron is just as important as general fitness training.
"Weight training is what makes the difference with how your body looks," she said.
"You can go running seven days a week but you won't change the shape of your body - you'll get fitter but it's weight training that makes the difference."
Mrs Knott said getting started is the hardest part but living a longer life is just one of the many benefits.
"Ultimately it's [about] the results ... once you start to see the change happening that becomes the driving force," she said.
"People start to notice - people start to say 'wow, you're looking great' - and it's nice to get compliments, especially as you're getting older."
