The 1991 Olympia thread had me reminiscing over the 1990 Night of Champions. It was Dorian Yate's pro debut and although he was mostly unknown at the time there had been a blurb about him in Flex magazine that had me on the lookout for this newcomer. I had not heard much about Sonny Schmidt though and he would go on to perhaps impress me the most of any contestant in the show as he had great mass but also great sweeps and proportions. I started posing my leg to the side on back shots after seeing him do so at this show and I would get to ask him about hamstring training at a guest posing years later.
This first three shots show another Night of Champions elaborate stage setting. I can't even recall who those are in the first two. I'm thinking possibly Eddie Robinson and Kim Chivezsky.

Phil Williams (a bit of a bodybuilding enigma. Won the 1984 USA's and had a pro victory at the 1989 Chicago Pro but it was downhill from there. Had some odd muscle shapes and structure from what I recall.)

Comparison time and here we have Yates, Morant and Robbie Robinson (although this was a bit of a comeback for Padilla who had been off for 4 years, Robinson had competed more consistently than his Pumping Iron co-star including wins at the first 2 Night of Champions in 1978 and 1979).

Benafatto, Eddie Robinson and Peter Andreas. (between Robinson and Andreas you can see 1988 Night of Champions winner Phil Hill in his last pro show. I was there to see him win in 1988 and he was super impressive. The only thing I recall about this 1990 showing was that his posing routine seemed to go more towards male dancer with a lot of gyrating. Perhaps he hoped to court favor with certain photographers who had a private party in the area post show... not that' there's anything wrong with that).
