~gymdiva~ is December 2015 Rx Muscle Member of the Month!
Sharon Garrett a.k.a. ~gymdiva~ has been a member of the Rx Muscle Forums since the very beginning, February 9, 2009. She's an NPC athlete who has competed in bodybuilding, physique, and figure, most recently at the 2014 NPC Excalibur in Los Angeles. Let's learn a little more about ~gymdiva~.
How were you introduced to the weights?
It started with my love of wrestling and the original American Gladiators. Some time while I was in middle school my dad bought a Muscle and Fitness magazine and I saw the women in there and thought, ok this is cool! Soon afterwards we finally got cable. I saw Body Shaping on ESPN and yes, I used to imitate their show in my bedroom-mildly embarrassing but true!
I did not start to truly workout until I reached college. Looking back at it, I was still an uneducated person doing more cardio than lifting but my legs have always been on the stronger side so I loved being able to do more on the leg press than my friends so it did stick with me. When I transferred from Appalachian State to UNC I started to learn more about training and nutrition while I studied for my BA in Exercise and Sports Science.
When you follow the_gymdiva on snapchat you occasionally get shots like these.
What is your favorite part of the iron game – strongman, bodybuilding, Men’s Physique, Bikini, etc.?
From a watching standpoint it is a tie: fitness and strongman. I first got the competing bug from watching fitness competitors in the late 90s and early 2000s. Oksana Grishina now, in my humble opinion, is the epitome of what fitness should be (ie, performance is catamount). I could watch routines like hers all day!
Strongman is a different animal. Watching how the human body is capable of performing such feats of strength is truly amazing. I have a coworker who is training for the Highland Games and listening to the training techniques he’s using is totally tapping into the science geek in me.

What's your favorite thing about bodybuilding?
Without a doubt it’s watching the body transform. You can accomplish so many things with the right combination of lifting, cardio, and nutrition.
What's your least favorite thing about bodybuilding?
Obsession: not everyone falls into this but I think we all go through moments where it’s all you think about. You no longer see anything as just food or activities. You start thinking, what’s the macro breakdown of that? Wonder how much I need to do to burn that off? There is a balance and a happy medium when not prepping for a show but the lines can easily be blurred.
What is your goal so far as the weights go?
To be more consistent. It has been my greatest weakness (literally and figuratively) for years now.
Would you share your greatest experience in the sport so far?
There have been so many! Most of them coming in 2007 when I did my three national level shows. The amount of people that helped me out along the way still shocks me to this day. I continue to try and pay it forward to others getting started when I can.
What has been one of your greatest disappointments?
Definitely missing 5th place by two points at USAs. You can’t help but to think of the things you’d do differently that could have brought you up to that spot.
Do you have any favorite bodybuilders or strength athletes?
Yes-hahahaha-I honestly have quite a list so I won’t list anyone specific.
Who is someone you look forward to meeting and perhaps picking their brain?
I got to meet Oksana at the Arnold but I’d love to be able to learn from her if I decided to transition to fitness. I would love to meet former and current women wrestlers to hear stories and to describe what it’s like to train from the beginning.
What’s the craziest workout program you’ve followed?
I’ll take craziest this time as something I probably shouldn’t have done. My first show was not a chemically smart approach. This is not some aas admission-it wasn’t like that. It was more along the lines of depending on supplements to do the work for me. My rebound was tremendous. No one prepared me for how the body reacts when you go from extreme to “normal.” Of course, I also wasn’t prepared for the crackhead type response my brain had after I had the first bit of “real food” again. Each show I have a fear of that rebound but each show I’ve done a little better in how I’ve handled that initial 4-6 weeks.

What has been the most effective workout you’ve followed?
Everything Shelby Starnes had me do last year for my show. I loved a lot of the combinations he gave me to follow. And it was the least amount of cardio I’ve ever done for a show!
What supplement company or brand does it right?
I use a little bit of everyone. Right now in our cabinet you’ll find protein powder from Sprouts (grocery store), supplements from Blackstone Labs and Prime Nutrition, GAT Nitroflex, and Sann fat burner.
Favorite TV show?
Depends on the genre. On the dvr I have: Young and the Restless, Maury, Jerry, The Daily Show, The Nightly Show, @Midnight, New Japan Pro Wrestling, Ring Of Honor, WWE, and Championship Wrestling From Hollywood.
Who's your favorite wrestler... old school and current day?
So many to name, so my short list would be: Mr. Perfect, Macho Man, Shawn Michaels, CM Punk, Dolph Ziggler, Nakamura (NJPW), and AJ Styles.
Pick three things you couldn't live without?
Excluding people: shoes, Menchie’s Yogurt, and a pet of some sort.
Talk to me about shoes. What brands or styles do you prefer? Gym > Dress/heels?
I love all shoes! I'll wear whatever is supportive and comfy for the gym and for going out it's the higher the heel, the better!
Sharon and Jiff the Dog!
"He's honestly the damn cutest thing in existence right now!"
Where did you meet Jiff?
I swore he had to have been fake until I met him-oddly enough at the Olympia-who thinks they're going to run into their dream dog at a major bodybuilding event?!
Many people don't understand the attachment, the love a person can have for a pet. Can you share a few words about your lil man?
You know, he was with me for 15 years-he had been with me in my lowest and highest moments-I've lived by myself almost that entire span so he was there to greet me every day-I come home now and it's empty-I still expect him to show up-but I wouldn't trade my time with him for anything-you know going into being a pet mama that it won't be forever-he will always be in my heart.
Sharon and lil man!
lil man, may he rest in peace.

Do you have brothers and sisters?
I’m it!
How did you learn about Rx Muscle Forums?
Well, like most of us, I was a part of the MD forums. I was a forum leader there for wrestling and when all the “Stuff” happened I came over with the others and continued being a forum leader.
What’s your favorite part of Rx Muscle Forums?
Contest coverage-I hope to see it pick back up to previous levels-it truly surpasses anyone else with its speed and honesty.
What would you do to improve the site and the forums in particular?
Having been a part of the discussion on how to improve this I’ll repeat some of what I said then: participation, participation, participation. The topics are there, the traffic is not.
Do you have a favorite movie?
Batman (the Michael Keaton version).
What’s your occupation?
Retail.
Are you ready for some Christmas insanity? I work a part-time retail job and am not looking forward to gift certificates and trying to ring up five people at once (or it seems that way) while answering the phone and helping five other people find things they need in the shop.
Fortunately, I've had enough years in restaurants and retail that the rush of shoppers doesn't phase me. Now, sometimes the attitudes can but if you waited and we don't have it then oops, I left my magic wand at home that day and can't do much for you.
LOL True.
What currently drives you nuts?
This is a long list-LOL-but I think right now it’s mostly the every day people on my Facebook feed who think they are political experts. I’ve unfollowed and unfriended quite a few people from some of their posts.
What motivates you?
The drive to not repeat past errors.
What are your hobbies?
Sleeping, shopping when I can, and taking pics around town-living near the beach makes the last one easy!
Thank you for participating as the Rx Muscle Member of the Month for December 2015, Sharon. Really appreciate that you took the time to share some of your story with us!

Congrats ~Gymdiva~! They certainly air a lot of wrestling shows where you are but no Impact Wrestling (TNA)? You mentioned wanting to meet former and current women wrestlers so I'd be interested in your favorites in that category. Gotta agree, Michael Keaton beats out Christian Bale for me as well.

"I know what your thinking. Did I fire 5 shots or did I fire 6 shots. You gotta ask yourself, Do you feel lucky? Well do ya, Punk?"
