When an unidentified man in his 20s in Kyushu, Japan, died suddenly and inexplicably in the fall of 2014, police ordered an inquest into the cause of his death.
Now Dr. Shinichi Kubo, a professor of forensics at Fukuoka University, is announcing that it appears to be the country's first documented case of fatal daily caffeine consumption, reports Japan Times.
"We had never heard of fatal caffeine intoxication," the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry said. The man, who worked midnight to dawn at a 24-hour gasoline station, had vomited on multiple counts in the year leading up to his death; Japan Timesreports such vomiting can signal caffeine intoxication.
The actual quantity of caffeine he consumed on the day of his death and in general is unknown. He was found to have trace amounts of alcohol and a high concentration of caffeine in his stomach (in a granular form that suggested he might have taken tablets), blood, and urine, as well as the remnants of a pill that may have also contained caffeine.
Fukuoka University determined the drinks—reportedly mostly soft drinks—were most likely what killed him, though the school wasn't legally permitted to run extensive tests on the pill.
Some experts put the lethal amount of caffeine ingestion in a day at 140 8-ounce cups of coffee (containing 14,000mg), reports the Wall Street Journal, though the FDA tells Americans that 600mg (so roughly 6 cups) is too much.
There have been reports of fatal caffeine overdoses in the US; this high school prom king died of a caffeine overdose just before graduating in 2014.

If you drink a lot of the Starbucks doubleshot, you could die from caffeine overdose. You should not drink more than 4 in a 24 hour period.

Back a few years I watched a guy mix ultimate orange Every time he was in the gym pre workout. So as I'm training I turn around and see his head in his hands. We called 911 and appeared his BP was sky high. Most likely from the ultimate orange. Idiot comes back few weeks later and says "fuck, vitamin stores are sold out of ultimate orange" I'm like "wow, you're an idiot"

Personal trainer dies from caffeine overdose after accidentally drinking the equivalent of 200 cups of coffee, reports say
A personal trainer died from an overdose after accidentally ingesting a powder with caffeine levels equivalent to up to 200 cups of coffee, an inquest heard, per reports.
Tom Mansfield, 29, bought a 100g (3.5 oz) bag of caffeine powder from Blackburn Distributions, a British sports supplements company, according to BBC News.
The recommended dose of caffeine powder, which is often used by gymgoers to aid their performance, was between 60 300mg (0.002 and 0.01 oz).
But Mansfield's digital scale had a starting weight of 2g (0.07 oz), and the product did not come with a measuring scoop, Yahoo! News reported.
The father-of-two from Colwyn Bay, Wales, miscalculated his measurement and scooped up to 5g (0.2 oz) of the powder, the inquest heard, per Yahoo! News.
Coroner John Gittins said Manfield had been aiming for the "mid-range of the recommended dose," but "he got his maths wrong," per BBC.
Mansfield took a sip of the mixture before downing the rest of the drink on January 5, 2021, the media outlet said.
The inquest heard that he began clutching his chest and complaining that his heart was beating fast, BBC News reported. Minutes later, the media outlet said, he started foaming at the mouth.
Paramedics arrived at his home and tried to resuscitate him for 45 minutes before pronouncing him dead at a hospital.
A post-mortem examination showed Mansfield had caffeine levels of 392mg per liter of blood, per BBC News. A typical coffee produces 2 to 4 mg per liter, meaning that he consumed the equivalent of up to 200 cups.
The cause of death was marked as caffeine toxicity.
According to North Wales Live, the coroner said that had Mansfield been provided with a scoop, he would likely still be alive today. Gittins said he had been "massively reassured" that Blackburn Distributions now provides a scoop with this brand of caffeine powder, the media outlet said.
