I was sort of laughing reading that, but it's true. I've been down the road of all sorts of tendonitis and I've taken time off from the gym simply because I was getting to the point of very limited range of motion or movement w/o pain. Last fall I was taking golf lessons at this indoor place (I live in Arizona and up until October it was just too F'n hot to be outside swinging a club w/o passing out). So it finally gets to be cooler (read: below 100F) so I go to this little driving range near my house. What I wasn't really paying attention to was the fact that there was really no grass - it had been mostly burned up in the heat over the summer.

So I get a big bucket of balls and start exercising the swing I've been working on for the last 2 months w/ a golf pro. Within the first 10 balls, I swung and basically attempted to throw a divot, but all I did was drive the club into the ground. It resulted in what I thought was just epic tendonitis. I already have tendonitis related to general wear & tear in my right elbow, but this one hurt like someone was beating on me w/ a whiffle ball bat. So what do I do? Wait until the pain subsides a little, and then swing again. Yep, Whacked it again, and it hurt so bad I just packed up my clubs and went home to ice it.

Jump forward to November - I'm 3 weeks out from a competition and I'm doing 70 lb DB rows. My right elbow/forearm starts to hurt after 3 sets so i just call it "the ol' tendonitis" and keep going. However my trainer is like "You might want to get that MRI'd..." So I schedule the MRAS -- result says its a 60% tear. They recommend Physical therapy, but I just said that likes just sitting around waiting for it to tear the rest of the way because I'm not going to just stop going to the gym.

I scheduled the surgery for early December. It's a good thing I did - upon going in there, the doctor said it was actually an 85% tear and was probably ready to snap at any moment.

I've since had the surgery & recovered and just working on getting back up to my regular weights. But I seriously went nearly a month w/ decently heavy lifting before someone else said I should get it checked out. i'm so used to having shitty tendonitis that I didn't really think it could be anything worse. Upon reflecting on that day at the driving range, I now know what it feels like when a muscle tears. Yikes.

But yea, there's s lot to be said for using common sense and basically anything that hinders your ability to get through the day w/o a lot of or sharp pain, should really be addressed ASAP. Small things like tendonitis can hang around for years, or tears like I had can hit you and you don't even know it until the muscle rolls up. Other stuff like CNS overload are more subtle and remind us that Recovery is just as important as diet & training in achieving our goals.

    Good stuff to think about

There should be a sassy69 information blog... a compilation of all your thoughts and advice.

    Something like John Meadows posts.

    Only with cat pics.

LOLZ! I was just thinking about that - I've been seeing my massage therapist 3x/week the last couple of weeks for a knee issue (which turns out again to be tendonitis, however not from golfing!) I'm usually quiet during massage sessions because it can be hard to talk through the donut hole & carry on a conversation - however I find myself talking about bodybuilding & cats. The massage therapist probably has me on her calendar as the "Weights & Cats Hour"...
