Good article with several good points, but IMHO YouTube, just like any tool, is ultimately neutral in and of itself. It's how it is used that determines whether or not it is truly "cancerous" in nature. And yes, it can even be great fun (who doesn't like watching a GOT Reaction video every now and then??). Nevertheless, just like any media it can be misused and abused. And the Internet is the ultimate free and democratic society, so astoundingly free that anyone with an opinion, informed or otherwise, is able to voice that opinion and consequently able to attract a following. You just have to use YT intelligently; to realize that this one person you're watching is just that, ONE PERSON, and to be truly be objectively informed on ANY topic involved getting multiple POVs on that topic, subjecting each to critical evaluation, and THEN making up one's mind. It at least appears that the wisdom of the old saying "don't believe everything you read" has, unfortunately, NOT carried over into the Internet age, where the modern day equivalent is "don't believe everything you watch."

Good points. My gripe is not actually with YouTube per say, I love YouTube. It is with the top YouTube stars in this particular industry and the fact that their followers are 15 to 20 year old kids who have zero ability to think critically about anything.

The other issue that I did not bring up in this piece but probably should have is the fact that these people are real people showing their real lives. What I mean is, Family Guy sends a bad message, but it is very clearly fake, nobody is going to take advice or look up to the characters in that show. Same can be said for The Office, Everybody Loves Raymond or any other sitcom. They are fake and only for entertainment, people arent idolizing the characters, that makes no sense. However, these YouTube clowns, again, are real people showing their real lives, causing young people to follow in their footsteps. In a sport that is already bleeding, we can not afford for our young people to come up emulating Rich Piana and Bostin Loyd.

There is a blurry line for real and fake in our society that has been around for a long time. For example, in the 1980's Rowdy Roddy Piper was stabbed on three occasions by fans who were unable to discern the difference between the person and the character.

What if one believed all communication as true?

What if one believed some communication as true?
What if one believed no communication as true?

Society operates under the first statement while most people agree that actual communication is somewhere between the second and third statement. We desire to be lied to. Our world system is built on lies. The world lies; salesmen, advertisers, politicians, teachers, everyone lies. Is there a requirement to tell the truth? No, it does not work that way. The game rewards liars. If we desire to believe in truth, lying has to go.

Whatever you do, if you have a YouTube channel monetize any creative content you put online.

I am no DLB but received a check from Google Ad Sense for clicks on my channel.
