Default Legitimate Exercise or a Cry for Attention?

Saw a powerlifter at my gym doing barbell rows where he was pretty much heaving the bar upward and then actively pushing it on the downward phase. Seemed abusive to the plates, floor, and just an attention grabber for the noise but does anyone here know of this as a legit move?

I've seen plenty of power-lifters throw the bar away from themselves in order to avoid getting hit as the bar drops, even guys who are strapped-in do this.

Seen that as well but not really what I was describing.

Was he banging it or bouncing it off the floor? Not sure if I'm picturing your description correctly.

There's a guy at the local Gold's who does his version of pullovers, laying (lying?) on the bench and just banging it on the end of the bench and using momentum or bounce to keep the bar moving. The one bench is pretty destroyed under the plastic or vinyl cover. It's just fiberboard and the chipped pieces are falling out the bottom and the end of the bench is easily flexed like a rag doll.

    Idiot.

He's pretty much doing a pendlay row but using body english to lift the bar and then actively pushing the bar downward to slam on the floor. Standing bent over in bar bell row position, heaves the weight upward to lower chest or top of stomach, then pushes the weight downward. I think it was 225 lbs on the bar. Gym has standard rubber floor probably over concrete.

You're dumbbell pullover guy sounds like a real winner as well. I think these guys figure that they pay their membership and that money can be put towards repairs. Of course that money has to go to rent, salaries and utilities plus it would be nice for the extra to be put towards new machines or repairs of pieces worn out due to normal wear and tear.

Nothing normal about slamming like your example or mine. I wish we had a Joe Gold type owner. EJECTED! Or Vince Gironda. "Get the hell out!" (throws membership fee at offender)

I saw someone doing this barbell slam-row today. I could see it (and dismissi it, hell even applaud it) for a 3xBW deadlift, but not for rows.

I'm pretty sure this wouldn't fly in Weinberger's gym either but he does have rubber plates in there so it's a moot point. My gym's owner is rarely there. Dropping dumbbells after presses is one thing but this just seems like a new level. Seems more prevalent in powerlifting. There's a squatty powerlifting gal there who like to let go of cables and have the stack slam after curls so I guess it's not reserved for the guys.

Yeah, I can see reserving all your energy for the concentric phase of a deadlift and letting it drop between reps if that's what you want to do. Heck, I slow it down to some degree on the eccentric and it's still pretty loud on the heavy sets. Not so much the noise though, as just the sheer idiocy of it of course.

Grunting and/or farting on a legit heavy lift is badass and is perfectly fine IMO!

I'm there too. My hubby says the miliary can send me in as a one-woman chemical warfare agent. I've been shopping for new knee sleeves, belt, and such and he told me go ahead and buy the SBD brand because the acronym is fitting: "silent but deadly"

If I am understanding what you witnessed, it sounds like he was performing a "row" followed by a push of the weight to the floor. Perhaps he was working his stretch reflex for bench by antagonistic training of the back followed by an assisted (gravity) press.

Squat on a ball? Perhaps it is time to go to a new gym?
