Too many people expect things to be given to them and have grand delusion of what this industry brings them. I get contacted all the time by kids who say they want to be fitness models or competitors and quit their jobs ect. My response.... Get 3 more jobs if you want to pursue this!. I survive, not broke, dont like week to week or month to month and live in one of the most expensive places in the US. But my wife and I work a ton. I was training 4-6 clients a day 7 days a week this prep, I also prep meals for clients, make a small income from merchandise, the commercial work helps a great deal (more with money saved as far as being union and having DIRT) cheap health and dental, also have a paying contract and am inserting myself to not just be an athlete but actually work FOR the company doing projects which will stream in more revenue as well as job security. My wife is a paid athlete, works for the company as well doing marketing and event coordinating, and bartends here and there when she feels like the bank account is going south. Is it the most efficient way to do things? Probably not, but all of these allow us to have more freedom to travel and compete and pursue our passion all while saving for a family. Eventually we will find our niche I am sure of and be in a much more stable situation, but until then we work a bunch of angles.
The rise is social media is a huge platform for people to capitalize on and I admit I am really bad at it. I would much rather train then worry about filming sets but you have to create your brand. I do not have patience to edit videos and can not afford to pay someone to produce YouTube videos weekly yet so I put them out 1-2x a month just to stay active. So many ways to make a living these days its sad to see people with talent struggling.

Great post. Piana, who edits himself, markets like a mofo in his videos. If you can't do it get someone who can. Pay them in protein.

this was probably the 1st rant of daves ive ever watched...loved it, dont know if this was mentioned already or not but...i think if guy/ladies in the industry viewed themselves as independent contractors and not actual "pro athletes"...they'd be more proactive in pursuit of steady revenue...dont most competitors prep/travel/compete on their own dime? when i fought as a pro in my 20's...everything was covered in relation to travel/food and fight night, it was up to me to make sure my trainers and corner got a piece but i made sure that was covered before any contract was faxed off...guess im saying there is no gaurnteed money like the popular pro level "athletics"
