Justin Miller is Rx Muscle's Member of the Month for December 2016!

Justin Miller aka JUSTINIAN @ http://forums.rxmuscle.com/member.php?2202-JUSTINIAN is a longtime member of the forum. He's competed successfully and currently works with some very talented athletes.

Some of the more notable bodybuilders he has coached would be Daryl Gee, 2009 USA Middleweight Champ; Maria Rita Penteado, 2013 USA Overall Women's Physique Champ; Amit Roy, 2016 Arnold Amateur Runner Up; Nikki Rose Sims, 2016 IFBB Universe Overall Women's Physique Champ; and George Peterson, 2016 Overall National Champ Classic Physique. There are many more! Let's learn more about Justin Miller!

How were you introduced to the weights?

After watching Rocky 2 in the theaters with my mom when I was a little kid. In fact, we stopped at my uncle's house on the way home and got 5 and 10 lbs dumbells and I worked out as soon as I got home.

How did you start coaching clients or help competitors with prep?

Just organically happened by helping friends who saw me win my first show and wanted help to compete back in the mid 90s.

What was Nationals like for you this year? Congratulations on your success!

Thank you, Curt. I appreciate that. Nationals was very good overall. I was there with 2 athletes Jeff and George and was very proud of them both. They both handled their business. I was crazy excited for George. 3 years away from competing and then boom… out of nowhere there he was Overall Champ at Nationals! Kinda surreal experience for us both, but also very cool.

George Peterson, 2016 Nationals Overall Classic Physique Champion

How did you learn about Rx Muscle Forums?

I’ve been Dave’s friend for like 25 years and wrote for the first issue of RxMuscle when it was a magazine… long before RxMuscle.com was created so I was around since the early days.

What’s your favorite part of Rx Muscle Forums?

I like RxMuscle Forums because Rx is in my opinion the best form of interactive bodybuilding media… forum members have a good energy. Dave covers the sport in a pure fashion, has a unique insight and attracts purist type fans.

    received_10154570832985991.jpg
Amit Roy, 2016 Arnold Amateur Runner Up

What would you do to improve the site and the forums in particular?

Hmmm, more participation maybe… maybe if there was a way to link all social media activity onto the forum posts somehow. Other than that, I look forward to seeing Rx continue to grow in quality coverage as it has for the last several years.

Do you have a favorite movie?

I have a bunch. It's hard to narrow it down between Star Wars, Rocky, Avatar, Gladiator etc., but if I had to name one movie, believe it or not, I would say Forrest Gump.

What is your favorite part of the iron game – strongman, bodybuilding, Men’s Physique, Bikini, etc.?

Right now, I would have to say the new Classic division for men and the Women’s Physique Division.

    received_10154570820355991.jpeg
Maria Rita Penteado, 2013 USA Overall Women's Physique Champ

What's your favorite thing about bodybuilding?

The personal challenge… the creation of something great from something average. The idea of taking an ordinary body and making it become extraordinary using the power of the mind.

    received_10154570847845991.jpg
Nikki Rose Sims, 2016 Universe Overall Women's Physique Champ

What's your least favorite thing about bodybuilding?

For sure, the egos involved. Very few do it solely for the LOVE and PASSION of the sport anymore… athletes do it to be famous, promoters and coaches do it for the money… but very few do it simply for the passion of it anymore.

What's your opinion of all the different categories or divisions?

I think all the categories are GREAT because it gives all different kinds of people a place to compete… people with different goals and standards of body types they desire to achieve have a place they can go.

    received_10154570816440991.jpg
Daryl Gee, 2009 USA Middleweight Champ

    What is your goal?

To help others achieve greatness… to help people I care about live their dreams.

Would you share your greatest experience in the sport so far?

There are many, anyone who knows me will tell you I have a million stories. But the one that stands far above the rest was winning my first show in front of close to 100 friends and family… a show almost NOBODY thought I could win (Dave was actually one of the few who gave me any chance).

It was in 1994 and I was 21 years old. It's too long to tell here, but I’ll say this… it connected me to my mom’s spirit. She had died 7 months earlier suddenly at 43 years old… I found her in a coma. It was hard for me. I lost my business, had to drop out of school… I was just crushed. The only thing I had left in my heart was a dream… a very unlikely dream of winning the biggest show I could possibly enter despite having never competed before.

I did it, I lost 50 lbs. and won and it connected me to my mom’s spirit that day. It was the first day I had ever felt her presence since she had passed. I had no business winning that show… it was her energy that made me great that day. I went home that night and cried so hard. It was one of the greatest moments of my life.

    Screenshot_2016-12-01-03-16-59-1.jpg

That's amazing. And could you share what has been one of your greatest disappointments?

Having my competing career cut short. I was 39 years old and felt I was just about to make my mark in the sport and God had other plans. I had a heart attack and made the decision to not tempt fate and although it was a difficult decision to stop competing it was the only logical one I could make.

So I walked away, but it wasn’t easy for me. My best was yet to come… or so I thought. Although many said I should still compete once I recovered, I feel I made the correct decision to walk away.

Do you have any favorite bodybuilders or strength athletes?

The ones with the greatest character… great physiques are admirable but what I admire much more are those who have strong character.

I really like the current team of athletes we have… all good solid people. Starting with my wife Rita. We got a good group of athletes… nobody is famous yet, but everybody is talented and works real hard.

    Screenshot_2016-12-01-03-24-21-1.jpg

Who is someone you look forward to meeting and perhaps picking their brain?

Hmmm, in this industry I’d have to say Dorian Yates… and I wouldn’t pick his brain about bodybuilding, just about life. He seems like a guy with interesting insight.

    How’s your training going?

Not as good as those whom I train lol… but trying to progress and improve. My approach for many years was on the extreme but now my goal is more on balance.

And how long have you been training?

    Over 33 years now… since I was about 10.

How long have you been coaching?

I’ve been coaching people quietly for over 2 decades now in bodybuilding and other sports as well. I was never a big limelight guy as far as coaching. I’ve had a great degree of success but most of it unknown.

Experience has played a factor in my evolution as a coach, I would say. I have become a much better coach than I ever was an athlete. The mistakes I made as an athlete have helped me in coaching others.

    Screenshot_2016-12-01-03-30-12-1.jpg

What’s the craziest workout program you’ve followed?

Lol… I've done some crazy stuff over the years. But I’ve learned that it's not the craziest routines that are usually the most effective.

Would you rather train someone with incredible gifts or incredible work ethic?

That’s easy! Incredible work ethic every time! Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work as hard. As a coach, what I want is someone who values my knowledge and will listen. Talent matters, of course, but it's only one ingredient. I'd rather help someone become THEIR best… the best they can be. The only ones you can do that with are the ones willing to listen and willing to give it their best effort.

What has been the most effective workout you’ve followed?

Any that took into account what my body needed at the time. There is truly no “one” most effective workout. The human body is a fluid organism… it's always changing and we are not machines. Every body is different and every body is different every time. So I would say any program that has flexibility and can yield effective results while minimizing risk is best. (Sorry if that sounds vague.)

    Favorite TV show?

    Sportscenter.

What are three things you couldn't live without?

    Air, water and food.

    What currently drives you nuts?

    Injuries.

    What motivates you?

    Helping others.

    What are your hobbies?

Besides bodybuilding, I also love watching Mixed Martial Arts and American Football.

    Do you have any pets?

Yes… my pride and joy, Mystic… he was a rescue who found me 8 years ago. A little Japanese Chin with a huge spirit… follow him on Facebook or Instagram @MysticMiller… he's a special little guy. =D
