More than one piece of each equipment. There is nothing worse than standing there trying to work in with soccer-mommy on her damn phone leg pressing a dime on each side.

desire, really if you have a set of dumbells you can increase resistance by angles reps, rest, theres unlimited possibilitys, barebell, bench, plates, sqaut rack! a full stomach (no one likes to dry heave)

Most important thing is good equipment. My gym is all free weights. The only machines they have are about 30 years old and these work just fine. As long as the equipment is good, there is no reason why you can't get a good workout.
After that in my opinion, the atmosphere and the other members are what make a gym. I've been to lots of gyms, expensive and cheap and none have the rawness of my gym or the cameraderie of the members at my gym. Everyone's there to train.
