    Question Hungry & Wants It

I just heard a baseball manager say that about a pro baseball player who seemed to come back to spring training with a renewed dedication to being the absolute best he can be. I wonder if anyone reading this can say the same thing. You're hungry & you want it.

I was in a serious motorcycle accident in 2011. They say I was gone (low or no heart beat) for nearly a minute. I guess that was a long time ago, but considering the injuries and the fact that I had to learn to use my hands again after my fingers were broken, it seems like yesterday.

I had dropped down to 235lbs, coming from a pretty solid 280lbs before that. Due to problems this caused in my personal life and my professional life, I am just now getting to and past where I was before the accident. I tried to lift even right after the accident but found I could only do curls with a wrist brace and very limited and light weight chest work. That is the only reason I maintained that 235lbs.

I don't compete and seriously don't have the desire. I just have that strong desire to make enough progress....which for me is never enough.

I'm about 305lbs right now which is the heaviest I have ever been and the strongest. I am hungry to be that kind of lifter that makes the average person go, "what the fuck" when they see me. I'm back in the gym regularly and I got a "what the fuck" last night after leaving the gym and going to the store...so I guess I'm on target.

Everybody here knows I give every workout my best, even though I've had to come up with some interesting work arounds given my physical issues. People see the weights I move and it's not uncommon for me to get a "WTF?" look every time I train (I'm just a few pounds away from a 2xBW deadlift and can squat 1.5xBW for 12).

Brace yourselves. It's all about to get kicked up a notch.

I've had back and hip trouble since I was a kid, last year was told I've worn away all the cartilage in my left hip and low back. I took it pretty hard, but I'm determined to avoid surgery as long as possible. Been doing some intensive weekly therapy with a sports chiro who really knows his stuff. With his help I've gotten a lot more mobility and am off pain meds and muscle relaxers for the first time in 19 years. But it still hurts with every step and I've walked with a limp for years. Sitting is always painful and my limp is that much more obvious after extensive sitting. Yesterday I hit a milestone of sorts. I had been stretching while my kids had swim practice, got up off the floor, and walked across the pool complex. I got to the other side and realized something was different: that pain I've felt with every single step for years was gone, and I had walked over 50 yards without a limp and not having to concentrate on every step. Woke up this morning still pain free, ready to attack the gym like never before. GAME ON!

Ozzie Smith, the Major League Baseball Hall of Famer for the St. Louis Cardinals, revealed after the fact that he had a rotator-cuff tear in his shoulder & had been advised to have surgery & miss at least one full year. He refused. He worked around it & still did the back flips on the field that he was famous for, & the fans expected to see. So kudos to you, Sunnyday. You are up with the best of them.

Congrats, Prof, on your recovery & return to form. Perry Smith, the lead killer in IN COLD BLOOD, called them "murder-cycles" because his injury on one gave him a limp for life. I think of life as cyclic. I once looked at myself in the mirror & forgave myself for failing to finish my dissertation, & said, "No one is going to think less of you if you never finish it. Your family & friends will still love you, & you will find your place in life regardless." Six months later I was finished with it, & that moment was the turning point for me.

I wonder if anyone is interested in updating this thread on why they "stay hungry" (the philosophy of bodybuilding that served as the title of Charles Gaines' 1972 novel about the bodybuilding world). I will start.

I have always wanted to be a published novelist. I decided to do that when I was 13 years old. I just retired from a college teaching career & guess what? I have never been a published novelist. But I still want to be, & am going to do it.
