Negativity in bodybuilding?
How about negativity period. It's in all sports. In the NFL, you had Tom Brady in the Patriots mount a stunning comeback to win the Super Bowl, but the stories that have dominated the last 12 months was "Deflate-gate", Colin Kaepernick's protest, and the love triangle in Dallas between Dack, Jerry, and Romo.
And do we need to delve into the coarseness of this country's politics over the last 25 years? Is there anything positive about our current state of affairs?
The only question I had from this episode is John comparing bodybuilding to pro wrestling. We all remember McMahon created the WBF to add some entertainment value to the sport.
I'm wondering if he started it TODAY... would it have had a greater chance for success given the current climate that Dave and John mentioned?
Back in the 90's bodybuilding was arguably at it's highest with mainstream media attention - particularly on ESPN. Such coverage has declined drastically since then despite social media and streaming. Could now be the right time to try again. I would think IFBB would have a hard time challenging WWE today... now WWE is mainstream having coverage on ESPN Sportscenter...... IFBB may want to be proactive in pursuing a relationship with WWE. It could only help their brand.

It won't happen. The IFBB is too busy controlling its turf to bother with what others think of it. It doesn't want to give up any control, & if others had a say in how things should be in the pro bodybuilding world, it wouldn't stand for it. It's better to be a big frog in a small pond, at least according to the IFBB. That's why bodybuilding news is never reported in the mainstream media (I mean who wins the Olympia).

The only things I dislike more than negativity are fake smiles.

If bodybuilding is just a sport, I can understand the negativity. After all, the whole point of a bodybuilding competition is to isolate the flaws of each competitor until only the one with the least flaws is left as the winner. That's what all the posing is about--for the judges to find out what you don't have.
But as Charles Gaines & George Butler made clear in 1974, in their book PUMPING IRON: THE ART AND SPORT OF BODYBUILDING (Simon & Schuster), bodybuilding is also an art. & in that art there is plenty of camaraderie, community, & fun. Here are a couple of pix from Butler's work in this classic book. & there is no negativity in these pix.
