The most exciting moment I ever had in a stadium happened on 24 July 2001. Knowing Big Mac was retiring at the end of that season, I got to Busch to witness the Cards host the 'Stros. Big Mac could barely run--his knees were toast. He either struck out or hit a HR & jogged the bases. You could feel the entire stadium collectively hold its breath when he walked to the plate. When he finally connected, the ball didn't arc up & down; it went off the bat like a beam of light, a laser shot that banged off the opposite wall. It was a great moment in my life.

Ken Caminiti got me into baseball in 1997, & the Marlins win in the Fall Classic I will treasure forever.
The home run chase between Mac & Sammy kept me riveted to the TV in 1998. After that, I was a fan for life.
Luis Gonzalez's walk-off hit that won the 2001 World Series for the D'backs is another great memory. I have a signed Luis G baseball.
Another fave: Jeff Bagwell. Astros Killer B's--yeah!

Little rant here. Still disheartened to see Mitch Moreland in a BoSox uni. Why teams get rid of great hitters & then complain their hitting is suffering the next year is beyond me. The Tribe did it w/ Nap; the Mets did it w/ Daniel Murphy. I just shook my head.
One tale about the BoSox. In the earlier '00s, Red Sox Nation gave the owner of the Yankees an honorary membership in Red Sox Nation (which was never accepted). Reporters asked the prez of Red Sox Nation why they did it. "Because there are so many advantages to being in the Red Sox Nation," he said.

Sometimes teams will release a good player because someone else is coming up from the minors & that guy will cost the team less (the A's just did that with Trevor Plouffe). Other times, a good player will be hard to manage, or get into fights with teammates. In February, no one had the first base job with the Rangers. They allowed spring training to shake that out. Mitch is doing well for the BoSox, so it's nice to see him still playing. I was relieved that the Blue Jays picked up Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who has bounced around.

Just saw Kendrys Morales get a hit. Was so sorry to see the Royals dump him & then to make it even worse, he ended up w/ the Evil Empire.

I watched a game last night I consider pure baseball. The Cards in Philly, down zero to five, & they ground it out, started getting HRs, throwing runners out at the plate, & finally evened the score in the 9th, & won in the 10th. Tommy Pham got two HRs & threw two baserunners out from the outfield, but was P.O.'d at himself that he struck out three times. If he had not done any one of those four things, the Cards would likely have lost. A few Cards fans in the stands were having a blast, & Philly fans went home upset. The Cards are digging out of a deficit right now & fighting for their lives against the Brew Crew, who have had an unexpected resurgence. The All Star break should shake out a few cobwebs, & then they're headed into the grueling Dog Days.

My Royals are starting to heat up. Salvy hit a grand slam walk-off two nights ago at the K (Kauffman Stadium, which is so beautiful I was speechless when I first walked into it), & tonight (Friday 23 June) the Royals went into the final inning down 4-1 vs. the Evil Empire (Blue Jays) & won the game. They chipped away, & Whit Merrifield got a two-run walk-off hit (on a 3-1 count) & the entire stadium (which was a sell out for Friday Fireworks night, but also due to the team rivalry) erupted--not to mention the team members who mobbed Merrifield on the field. Merrifield saved the day & has shifted from promising young player to one of the team's big boys. The Royals are back to 500 for the first time since early April.

Yikes! The Tigers higher ups are talking fire sale. Something has to give. It's ridiculous.
