The MLB Thread
I am starting the MLB thread! I hope other Major League Baseball fans join me.
I'll start by saying the home run chase is back, only without use. Players have pretty much caught up with where they were in the late '90s when juice & beans reigned supreme in baseball clubhouses nationwide. Although steroids were the scandal at the era, beans (amphetamines) were more abused, & in some clubhouses put out in bowls by the field manager (or at least approved by him). Beans made it easier to get through a grueling six-month season of a near daily grind. These performance enhancers are for the most part a thing of the past in major league baseball. The testing is excellent these days.
However (& it's a BIG however), advances in training, nutrition, therapy, psychology of sports, & no doubt other things outsiders haven't heard about -- as well as unlimited money due to the big salaries -- have eliminated the need for performance enhancers. Players are strong as oxen, including the pitchers, & home runs are now a dime a dozen, as is consistent pitching at 95+ mph. & in the National League, some pitchers (e.g., Mad Bum) are such good hitters they're being slotted in as DHers or pinch hitters in interleague stadiums. Some of the current players have the gorilla builds of Sammy Sosa & Mark McGwire (e.g., Evan Gattis, who has bench pressed Jose Altuve in the clubhouse weight room), but a lot of them are just compactly built but still hit the ball over the fence.
& whatever changes have happened in baseball, chicks (& everyone else) still dig the long ball.

The Rangers are looking good this year. My fave MLB player Mike Napoli is back on the team for his third go-round, & I'm hoping he brings them some luck. He was instrumental in getting the Tribe to the World Series last year, & then they inexplicably let him walk.

MLB has been exciting so far this year. Unfortunately, my team (the Royals) have been in the dumpster so far. They've had to send some players down to try to wake up their bats, which hasn't happened yet. Pitching has been pretty good so far, but the hitters aren't hitting.
I must say the Rangers are looking good, though. & I like them a lot. I like every team except the Yankees, a team I admire but do not like.

After watching the Orioles vs Red Sox highlights I lost all respect for Dustin Pedroia. Machado gets plunked in obvious retaliation. Machado looks his way and the first words out of his mouth are "It's not me, it's them." Granted , nobody's head should ever be thrown at but the pitcher was sticking up for him. Just shut up and let everything unfold. No need to throw your pitcher and catcher under the bus. Just my 2 cents.

If someone threw at your head with a mph missile, you might feel differently.

Not everyone plays with the same unwritten rules. It's a long season with a lot of provocations that hold over from other years. Sometimes two players will get mad at each other years back, & retaliate against each other later on when both of them are on other teams (given the merry go round of team reassignments that happens now).

CarGo is one hell of a player. Right now the hitting is a bit off kilter as a whole, but it should come around.
I did a vacation to Texas in 1998 to be able to see my fave player (Ken Caminiti) live in June 1998. He was on the Padres, who were doing an interleague game with the Rangers. The Rangers had been doing well so far that season, & the Padres had not been doing well. In this game, the Rangers tanked. The field manager changed pitchers several times in one late inning, & every pitcher gave up runs. I think that one inning took 45 minutes (it felt like eternity). The game went long, needless to say, & the Rangers lost. That game turned both teams around. After that, the Rangers tanked & the Padres ended up in the World Series vs. the Yankees.

Bautista will pay for years for his ostentatious bat flip. That was a major violation of unwritten rules, although it was feted by the media. Players were offended. I loved what Odor did. He proved he could walk the walk when he knocked Bautista down. I do like Bautista, but felt he needed to get knocked down a few pegs. So far the Jays are tanking, but that could change.
FINALLY my team (Los Royales) started hitting on Monday night. They skunked the White Sox 6-1. Boy did that feel good.Last edited by hifrommike65; 05-02-2017 at 07:19 AM.
