    Lightbulb Bodybuilding Genius

Big Beat got me thinking about what constitutes bodybuilding genius, so I had to start a thread about it. I checked Merriam-Webster definitions & have these definitions that fit bodybuilding in some way:

    1) A person who influences another for good or bad. (E.g., The genius behind his career finally destroyed him.)

    2) A strong leaning or inclination; penchant. (E.g., She's a genius in the gym, knowing just how far to push every workout.)

    3) A single strongly marked capacity or aptitude. (E.g., He's a genius at maintaining a bodybuilding following in social media.)

I'm going to offer a personal quick & dirty short definition for genius: really brilliant.

Using the above, I'm going to mention three bodybuilding geniuses, as I challenged Big Beat to do.

FRANK ZANE. He has the smarts (taught math) & approaches bodybuilding in a methodical, philosophical, & documented way.

BEV FRANCIS. She spun a great pro career into one of the most dominant runs in contest promotion, along with her husband (who would fit the first definition of influencing her).

HULK HOGAN (Terry Bollea). Possibly the person who has made the most money flexing his muscles in front of a crowd. His genius was realizing there was no future standing on a bodybuilding stage; he needed sports entertainment to accomplish what he wanted to do.

I just want to clarify that there is a difference between saying:

    A. He is no genius as a bodybuilder

    and

    B. There are geniuses (genii) who are bodybuilders.

The Weiders and the other succeszful publishers before the era of social media seem the smartest guys . Then the big supplement owners followed by high end gurus. Some former bodybuilders have proven themselves in businss and this shows smarts if not always intelligence.

As far as the most intelligent successful bodybuilder I would say Zane stands out head and shoulders above the rest. Bill Pearl ia anothers that seems to me to have more gears in the upstairs department. I think most recognise Milos is a clever guy.

As far as being a genius at what is needed to become a great bodybuilder I think Dorian and Arnold win that hands down.

The first definition (which actually derives from 'jinni' as in the Aladdin folktale) fits some of the things you are getting at, Big Beat. A genius marketer made Eugen Sandow famous (Flo Ziegfeld, who managed Sandow in the Ziegfeld Follies), & Charles Atlas was helped by Dr. Frederick Tilney, who created the "health & strength" course that became the basis of the mail-order business that Atlas (formerly Siciliano) rode to stardom. In Arnold's case, it would have to be Joe Weider. & the same is true of the rest of the Mr. Olympias--the Weiders created the contest to attract & market the greatest bodybuilders, & destroy their competition, which they did.

The negative "genii" noted above are covered by the first definition (influencing for the bad). The first jinni called up in The Thousand Nights & a Night threatens to kill its rescuer because it was in the lamp for such a long time.
