Why I Miss Musclemag International
I have lots of old bodybuilding mags stacked up in my spare room, & have been meaning to tear them down for the things I want to keep. So I grabbed one at random & discovered it to be the February 2007 issue of Musclemag International (issue #297). It would have been delivered in December, as Musclemag dated its issues early. These are the pages I kept when I tore the issue down. Compare to what you get in current mags--the ones left, that is.
"First Rep" (opening column) was about Lee Priest winning the 2nd PDI contest. The only person in the results list still competing is Sami Al Haddad, who came in 2nd.
"Muscle Buzz" picked up Scott Milne, who looked small at 300 pounds onstage, given his height of 6'4". The 2005 Charlotte Pro judges suggested he get bigger & he decided to try to compete at 330. He just signed a contract w/ Muscletech, & appears in an ad in the issue.
"Bits 'n' Pieces" feature notes Vince Gironda was cremated by his wife, after email inquiries about where his grave was.
"Arnold Hotline" column had two pages on the Governator. Also a training tip from him on barbell wrist curls & reverse wrist curls.
"Inside Out" notes the IFBB waived sanctioning fees for pro women's bodybuilding shows to encourage promoters to include it. (There were NO female bodybuilders at the NPC Junior Nationals just held in Chicago.) Mike Katz got into the Pro Bodybuilding Hall of Fame. Info on grand prix shows after the Olympia (Austrian, Romanian, Dutch, all won by Jay, who had just taken his first Sandow at the 2006 Mr. Olympia).
Full feature on the Ms. Olympia contest, with Iris Kyle winning. Report by Steve Wennerstrom, pix by Irvin Gelb. Excellent spread & discussion. Full page pic of Iris.
Two-page feature titled "Arnold, the UK Years," with Arnold arriving in 1966 for a NABBA show. Nice pix.
Interview with Jeramy Freeman. I'll link a 2016 YouTube interview with him below this. He's no longer competing, but he's still working in the industry. (Freeman was sponsored by Muscletech, which had loads of ads in the issue.)
Contest report on the IFBB Montreal Pro Classic, won by Johnny O. Jackson.
Cooking column by Carlo Filippone has recipes for fish I'm going to try.
"Canadian Corner" covers 2006 Canadian World Qualifier (to get onto the Team Canada squad for amateur IFBB competition by nation abroad).
Tony Monchinski does a "Hardcore East" column on PDI.
"Muscle Flashes" column notes Fouad Abiad just went pro at the 2006 Canadian Championships.
Pro Rankings lists the top 100 men, & the top 62 women in IFBB pro bodybuilding.
& "Musclehedz" cartoons with the tiny headed bodybuilders w/ enormous torsos & arms. One welcomes a new guy to the gym w/ the caption, "Hey, we know exactly how you feel--we all got sick & tired of training at that 'pretty boy' gym, too."
Lots of pix of David Henry & King Kamali throughout the issue.

Where I live, it's rare to find any muscle magazines. Muscle & Fitness is about the only one you can find, and that's if you're lucky!

Try Barnes & Noble in Orlando. It ought to have a decent selection. Every other B&N I've been in does.

Curt said on another thread, I believe social media could have kept MuscleMag International in the game. Really wish Robert Kennedy would have embraced it.
I don't know that any mag has been helped by the Internet, inside or outside of bodybuilding. The 'net has given us the impression that content should be free of charge, once we have paid for the computer, operating system, security system & electricity to run it. Mags cannot run for free. I cannot tell you how many mags I subscribed to that are now defunct.
Musclemag always had financial problems, & almost went under in the '80s. The issues got short & RK apologized to readers. It resumed its regular format & survived. When RK passed, it became clear that the mag was virtually bankrupt, & owed money to just about everyone. It folded quickly.
Kennedy hated the Internet. He saw it pretty much like the Borg on Star Trek: The Next Generation ("Resistance is futile; you will be assimilated"). Only the strongest mags have survived. Some have managed to create new formats via the Internet, but they are not yet major players. Anything can happen, though. In the realm of sci fi, Tor has morphed into Tor.com & is doing well.Last edited by hifrommike65; 06-25-2017 at 06:02 AM.

Robert Kennedy was great. His book 'Beef it: Upping the muscle mass' (circa 1983) is the best bbding book I ever read. I read that book so many times, looking at the pics, reading over the routines, that it physically fell to pieces by 1993. Musclemag international was great. I would have thought you could order reprints somewhere. Robert Kennedy had the best photos in his publications and I liked it that he published the routines of current bbders and classic ones like john grimek and steeve reeves.

In the mid-'90s I took Musclemag up on its back issue offer. It had ten sets of ten issues for $20 per set, plus shipping. I called & requested the offer. The woman in the office said, "Which set do you want?" I said, "ALL of them."

Rob Kennedy was, before he died, a subscriber to my Muscle Mob magazine (he and a handful of other publishers) swapped subscriptions. I may still have a handful of letters we exchanged. Heck we managed a 100 issues over our 8 years.
Lyman Dally's stuff was awesome. MD even had a pull out / fold out poster of Max Rep in one issue.06, 08, 09 and now 2010 British (4x) and 2008/2010 European Grip Champion (2x)

I wrote to Muscle Mob back in the day but I believe the mag had just gone under. A shame, it looked like a lot of fun.

You'd have written to me (I edited and published it for 7 years). It was a LOT of fun and a fair bit of work too ha ha
