Take this for what it's worth.... having Black friends, or hiring Blacks to work for you doesn't mean in the least you can't be racist.... Barring Romano's definition of the term, racism is how you look at people GENERALLY as a population.... i.e. the RACE, not the individual. Something though tends to happen though when people from other races develop a relationship.... the RACE identity tends to disappear... You become transparent, in part because they get to know you for who you are and not just judge you by the color of your skin.
But then that's part of the problem. When people start looking at you apart from your race and culture, often times it does not result in how they look at people generally. So I can be cool with Whites and Asian Indians (who I find can can more bigoted than Whites), but that doesn't mean they remove their stereotypes of other Black people. If they see a Black man in a hoodie coming towards them, they may still be wary or fearful. Or if I were wearing a hoodie and shades and they didn't recognize me right away, that doesn't mean they wouldn't be fearful until they knew it was me.
I have no doubt that Rich has friends of other races that he's learned to care about... but that doesn't mean he can't have a negative view of the race they come from. In his mind, you may be "one of the GOOD ones" or "one of the EXCEPTIONS"....
Personally I've had people who call me friend call another member of my race the "N" word, or in my presence say something stereotypical, but then catch themselves and say "oh, but not you Paul" or "I didn't mean YOU Paul"... So there's always going to be the tendency to SEPARATE those you know, or those you admire from the GEN POP...
That scene from 'Do The Right Thing', where Spike asked they guy who is favorite:
Athlete
Actor
Singer is indicative of the situation... They were all Black, but he didn't see them as "n.....rs"... they were more than that.
And to be fair, I believe on some levels we all do that.
just an opinion.
