Bodybuilding "girls"?

Listen to J.M. Manion here. Male bodybuilders are "men," but female bodybuilders are "girls." I am sick of hearing this, even from women of age in the industry who still refer to themselves are "girls." I'm not telling them what to call themselves, but I do think it suggests the prevailing attitudes about the sexes in the NPC. Try correlating it to the prize money for pro men vs. pro women.

i seen how they look and in the wellness, div. the girl's upper bodies look like bikini and the lower body looks like wpd. they are big on it overseas. just can't wait to see how the girls here will pull it off.

I think I've figured out the "girl" term in the bodybuilding world, for J.M. & everyone else, including women who compete & call themselves "girls" (like the women of age on The Golden Girls, a TV show I like a lot). A workout gym has long been considered a man's world. If women worked out in one, they were trying to act like men. Yes, some women were athletes, but they were not known for their femininity. How to reverse this stereotype in the bodybuilding world? Call women "girls." Why "girls"? Of all females, which one is the most appealing? A young pretty one, what the French call jeune fille. That is the image of woman the NPC wants to market. Not the tough, musclebound dame who can best men at arm wrestling. That image of woman does not appeal to men, & it does not appeal to women. The NPC has made massive strides in the last few decades in finding an image of woman it can market. First fitness. Then figure. Then bikini. Then women's physique. Now that all those things are in place, they can bring back female bodybuilders in the Olympia. But call all of them "girls." That way, the stereotype of the muscular woman is reversed. (Of course, other stereotypes are being perpetuated, but let's not go there.)

One NPC judge reportedly said he picked the figure class winner on the basis on which one he would most like to nail. That's not hard to believe watching the figure women in the Arnold Classic Europe lineups.
