    Cool Texas Rangers!

    http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2017/11/28/r...l-doug-fister/

Doug Fister has signed a free agent deal as a rotation pitcher for the Texas Rangers. This is the Rangers' first book off-season move. I have big hopes for this team next year. It's a team I have always liked.

Fister should fit in the middle of the rotation. If they get Ohtani (and if he's any good) and Hamels has a good season they could have a real good rotation.

Pitcher (former outfielder) Anthony Gose just signed a minor-league deal w/ the Rangers. They need all the pitching they can get, so let's hope this pans out for the team & for Gose.

Let's see if he can pitch on a mound with 100+ degree heat from June to August. A lot of pitchers have refused to go to the Rangers because of that.

Yeah we have an air conditioned stadium coming. This heat has kept free agents away for years.

From the Dallas Morning News, on Yu Darvish:

All throughout this sloth-like offseason, Rangers general manager Jon Daniels has maintained his team was unlikely to pull up a chair at the big-spenders table. But Yu Darvish - and the rest of the top pitchers on the market - would go unsigned for yet another week and the question would rise again.
    What about now Darvish now?
The question finally has a definitive answer. The answer is: No. Two baseball sources confirmed a report Saturday that Darvish had agreed to a six-year, $126 million deal with the Chicago Cubs. According to the report by Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic, Darvish could earn up to $150 million if he reaches every incentive in the deal, which is unlikely.
The Rangers never pursued Darvish. Oh, they kept in touch with him. But there is a big difference between staying in contact and talking contract. The Rangers never made a formal offer and weren't willing to offer Darvish half that magical $150 million figure and they weren't willing to go to five years, let alone six.
As much as Darvish likes it in Dallas - he's expected to maintain his year-round home here - the deal makes sense for the Cubs, but not the Rangers. The primary value in Darvish will be in the first three years of the contract. In essence, it's about being willing to pay him about $42 million for each of the next three seasons. After that, he will be approaching his 35th birthday and evidence suggests that even the best pitchers seem to have peaked and started some degree of decline by that age.
The Cubs are World Series contenders this season. And the next two. They need a piece like Darvish in the rotation. The Rangers are not in the same situation. All their moves this winter suggest they are gathering themselves for their next run. Hey, they might be ready as early as next season, but perhaps 2020 is more realistic. Either way, paying up front for a pitcher who won't make the difference this year, knowing you are also going to be paying for him when he can't make a difference at the end of the contract makes no sense.
Now, the Rangers aren't tanking, but they also understand the reality of their current situation. They will try to get better, but know they are facing long odds in a division that includes the defending world champions and the team that signed Shohei Ohtani and a league that includes the Yankees, Red Sox and Indians.
It's one thing to invest $10-12 million in an Andrew Cashner or John Lackey, who might help them get a bit better and improve their playoff chances marginally than to invest more than 10 times that amount for a guy who, through no fault of his own, is basically going to improve their chances similarly. There is no doubt Darvish is a better pitcher than Cashner or Lackey right now, but none of the three is going to turn the Rangers into a playoff favorite this year.
So, now, speaking of Cashner and Lackey, I expect the market to start moving along. Think NFL or NBA free agency surges. While Jake Arrieta remains an outlier, reportedly seeking more years and more money than Darvish, the rest of the market will fall in line behind Darvish. And with Darvish going to the Cubs, I expect other NL contenders, namely Los Angeles, Washington and Milwaukee to all make big pushes for the likes of Lance Lynn and Alex Cobb. They are likely to get somewhere in the $18 million range annually for 4-5 years. The Rangers won't be significantly involved there either.
But when it gets down to the guys on one-year deals, there will be somebody available in the $10-12 million range. There will be somebody who will help the Rangers improve incrementally. Only then will the Rangers perhaps act.
It won't be Darvish. That much, at least, we now know, once and for all.

Darvish was here 5 years.Rangers paid 100 million dollars.50 to Darvish and 50 to the Jap team to sign him. You know it's odd when you watch Darvish throw you think "Holy shit" this guy is awesome. He has about six different breaking pitches and about 96 mile an hour heater. Then he get's on the mound and can't get anyone out or at least get them out consistantly. He was wanting 30 mil a year and I was thinking no way he gets that.In the end he got 21mil for 6 years.I guess he can live on that.

This guy basically says the Rangers will not have a good year in 2018. So much for another cloudy crystal ball.
