It hardly a new thing......Joe Weider published several gay magazines after the 2nd world war that showed bodybuilders without their underpants on.
Was Joe gay or would he do just about anything to make a buck?

Old story, basic 101 of marketing - sex sells.
I can recall starting back in the 90s Weider pushed the Power and Sizzle centerfold section in FLEX that featured female bodybuilders and fitness women. Had a Playboy / Vargas genteel style of posing w/o any full frontal nudity.
Then there was MEM (Muscle Elegance Magazine) that Denise Masino published.Last edited by AlexG; 12-20-2017 at 11:06 AM.

Weider capitalising on homosexuality is old news but it needs to be remembered.
Like Wayne DeMilia said about dwindling audiences , "You know you're going the wrong way when the homosexuals say, 'We're not coming either.' "
Bodybuilding is the gayest "sport" of all time. Golds gym Venice has always been a mecca of homosexuality.
Weider was up to his balls in it.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that bodybuilding has a homoerotic appeal. On the other hand, so do gainers (those who get extremely fat as a fetish). If you type "bodybuilder" into a Google search, you're going to get sexually oriented hits on the first page. So what? That doesn't devalue bodybuilding in & of itself. For some it's a fetish. Most gay people are completely indifferent to bodybuilders. Most people don't give a fig for bodybuilders, & most don't even like the look or the idea of it. For some people, it's a lifestyle & way of improving their health. For a few, it's a form of body modification (e.g., Rich Piana). Why can't bodybuilding be different things to different people? I just don't see what the big deal is.

Bodybuilding has very little merit.
Only training to be stronger and fitter drug free has any merit to it, the rest of bodybuilding is a cess pool of depravity.

There is always going to be a sexual or erotic aspect to the appeal of muscle; there always has been and always will be. A fit, athletic body is sexually appealing. Period. You could argue that it's pretty much hardwired into our biology. Some definitely play that aspect up more than others for the purpose of selling their products like she describes in the article, but does she realize that there are people out there who would say that SHE would be guilty of helping to "pornographize" the industry, regardless of what steps she took personally to minimize that aspect?? There are some who say ANY display of skin is pornographic. She's trying to distance herself from those "other girls" without realizing that others could point to HER as being an example of the "pornographizing" of the fitness industry.
The only way I can see that you could completely eliminate the sexual/erotic aspect of muscle is to require everyone to wear full burkas, and then what's the point of doing that while at the same time being involved in an industry which by default involves the display of the human body??"A worthy woman who can find? For her value is far above rubies. She girds herself with strength, and makes her arms strong." -Proverbs 31: 10, 17
