In the loud public outcry over "saving our kids from steroids!" in the late 1980s, the New York Times ran an investigative series that had a lot of info. One factoid: The Mafia had gotten involved in trafficking AAS in some gyms because it was more profitable than pushing heroin on the street. They sent their goons in to threaten the lives of gym owners if they wouldn't sell to their members.
