This article reports a study that concludes an old grungy basement gym is better for working out than a fancy, well-lit modern one w/ big windows (which they reported to be distractions). The article says that the old gyms make people feel more part of a team.

The old Metro Athletic club were I powerlifted in the late 70s mid 80s was a small house that had some of the inside walls removed and was tiny by todays gym standards but I wouldn't trade my time there for anything.Almost everyone there competed and everyone pushed and helped each other.It was how I imagined Gold's in the late 60s must have been.

Powerlifting USA used to profile a hardcore gym in each issue, & a lot of them were just a garage or shed out back out in the country without heat in the winter or AC in the summer. But a small & tight group moved major iron in them year round.
