    Cool Bodybuilding is back!

This is a VEVO YouTube video. Of the Arnold Classic Europe. It is the final proof needed that it's the 70s again. Bodybuilding is back. Who do we have to thank for that? The same person who made bodybuilding cool in the 70s. Arnold.

What made bodybuilding mainstream again? It wasn't just Arnold. True, his unwillingness to abandon his roots left a big footprint. But I will mention two other things.

First, pro wrestling. Vince McMahon, Jr., tried & failed to get into the pro bodybuilding racket. However, he succeeded by finding a way to market bodybuilding posing & physiques to the masses: have the bodybuilders do something. That was one of the complaints IOC big wigs had w/ Ben Weider: BBs didn't do anything, they just stood there onstage & posed. That wasn't a sport. & it didn't appeal to non-bodybuilders. I was in a sports bar restaurant in the late 80s when a BB competition came on ESPN. The men around me looked uneasy & the women laughed. ESPN shifted its BB programming to late night, then ditched it. But McMahon found a way to make bodybuilding work. He turned posing into a campy put-on that appealed to kids, & tied it to cold war themes (US vs. Russians, US vs. Canadians,US vs. French, US vs. whoever) & beefed up the men. A 1989 TV Guide issue w/ Macho Man Randy Savage on the cover described his neck as looking like a psychotic lizard's. McMahon even had to weather a steroid scandal. That's official BB territory. He started a wellness policy & some flunked it, but most found a way around it as usual. & he has taken over mainstream BB media. The September 2019 Muscle & Fitness has John Cena on the cover. The October cover has "WWE's Fittest Superstars!", Seth Rollins & Becky Lynch, holding kettlebells.

Second, superhero movies. Notice the branding on this VEVO video: Sparta. It's 300. I took one look at that film in 2007 & knew Zack Snyder got it. He worked out himself, & he put his actors through grueling workouts. Yes, some of it was CGI, but the Spartan warriors had real muscles. They got to die arty deaths & still looked good. Fast forward to Chris Pratt, a schlubby TV actor. They ran his ass through the Gold's Gym mill & he looked like a BB too. The credits sequence of Guardians of the Galaxy shows a man in love w/ his new body. Meanwhile, Arnold the Second arrives in Hollywood. From where? Pro wrestling. The Rock becomes the highest paid actor, & gets bigger in each film he does. What's his current project? A BB competition & extravaganza next year that will blow the Olympia away. You know what that means: Pecker will have to step it up & start paying his winners real money. But w/ mainstream sponsors, he can do it. & like Arnold, Dwayne Johnson has instant credibility, charisma, & pop cult "cool." Next year is going to be quite a ride.

Now you see why I say bodybuilding is back?
