Agreed sb. I strongly believe both less & more reps are needed to work both types of muscle fibers & are important in improving strength. Keep the muscle guessing & it has to grow!!!

If I had to guess, 25% or less of my lifting is ACTUALLY heavy. 4-8 rep range. I’ve done well, but I could also stand to go through a mostly heavy phase for a bit. I think it would spike my growth personally when considering my typical routine. Maybe 50/50 seems good for what I’m used to. Earn that heavy lifting first. All I got.

Forgive me if I’m missing something here, guys.

Last I checked, Larry recently (Nov 26 post on IG) did a powerlifting meet. To train for that he lifted heavy, like 8 reps or fewer. In powerlifting, the competition is all about a single rep in squat, bench, and deadlift (or bench/deadlift, or just bench OR deadlift) and the biggest total wins. I was taught to practice like I play and so Larry’s training rep range leading into that meet makes perfect sense to me. (Not talking about the silliness he does with he arm wrestling). Now while I am not an elite lifter by any means, I was ranked top 5 nationally in my age/weight class just a year ago, and I have been trained by world class powerlifters. I don’t know of any powerlifter heading into a meet who is training the big 3 lifts in the 10-ish rep range to prepare for a meet.

So please help me understand: You guys are talking about how Larry needs to stay in the 10+ rep range for lifts to get strong, he needs to work with Aceto (not a powerlifting coach) and so on. What are you guys basing this on? He doesn’t appear to be getting ready for a bodybuilding show.
Is there some secret get-stronger training program you know about? If so, please spill the tea because there’s a certain 52-kg legend I would absolutely LOVE to beat at my next comp!! She’s the only one who can beat my bench and I would throat punch a baby to change that!

And by the way, guys, I read on Aceto’s Q&A thread around 2011-2012 that when asked about a specific rep range to get bigger AND stronger, the Technician himself answered (I’m paraphrasing) that if he had to pick a single rep range it would be the 5-8 rep range. He did caveat that with if pressed for just ONE rep range that’s the one he would pick.

Fun fact: Aceto and I share the same alma mater (you know)

SD, I will put any amount of money , if he continued on the same rep range, he will eventually hit a wall.

The key is to shock, the muscle. & When I say increase his reps, I mean every now and then, but also, go different rep ranges 3-6, 3x5, 3x3 etc.. obviously not hitting failure as he needs to build strength, not so much muscle.

I honestly see it as a step in the right direction by shocking aka increasing his rep range or even his volume, but also decreasing it as well. I believe shocking your CNS this way helps keep him from adaptation & that's no good if continuesly adapts & keeps going in circles

I do it once every few weeks and few things happen that helps me get better. One it puts a new challenge in my mind & makes more interesting & 2) it keeps those muscle tissues firing & yes I 100% believe it yields strength gain.
