Sudden almost complete loss of strength in left arm
Almost 4 months ago I woke up with a lot of pain shoulder and neck area. I was not doing in heavy training or much of training leading up to this. A bit over a week later the pain went away after the doctor prescribed anti inflammatory meds.
I had MRI's taken and there is no compression seen or damage seen (by the C5 area nor the brachial plexus).
I have been going to PT twice a week now since and also do some home movements advised by the therapists, but so far the strength has not returned.
The spinal surgeon and a neurologist both suggest to just wait. They said right now there is nothing to do outside of the PT, they claim in most cases the strength at least some of it returns.
Has anyone here ever heard of such a thing?
Did things return to normal?
Is there anything I can take to help along the healing process?
Anything I should ask the doctors?
Any help is very much appreciated. Thank you.Last edited by thearmissue; 02-09-2020 at 02:30 PM.

Weakness could only be attributed to spine, nerves or heart. If all 3 check off ok than check out your shoulder or neck.
Sounds like an impingement of a nerve or could be dislocated joint pressing on a nerve.

Thank you.
The heart is good.
I will share this with my doctor.
Have you ever heard of this situation whereas someone loses strength for so long and it comes back?
ThanksLast edited by thearmissue; 02-09-2020 at 05:09 PM.

When I was 19 I had something very similar to what you are experiencing, only to get worse as I got older.
Clicking sounds when I lifted my left arm up, pain, lack of range of motion etc..
Once I got it looked at, the Dr. Said based off of the MRI, that my shoulder was dislocated & was putting pressure on my rotator. So I did surgery on it and ended up with few screws in there. If I kept training heavy, Dr said it would be almost certain to lead to nerves damage/cartilage. If it's that annoying, I'd definitely resort to surgery.

Several years back I lost strength and size is my left pec, shoulder, bicep and tricep. I had some herniated discs and nerve damage. It took quite awhile to recover doing therapy.I never returned back to 100%... I'd guess around 80-85%, symmetry, size and strength on the left upper side are still off.

Thanks, how long from when you lost strength and started therapy did you start getting an increase back in strength?
Also what the doctor is saying now is that the nerve from C5 / brachial plexus are the problem but the MRI is not showing any compression or damage. What area of the spine was your issue and also what caused the damage?
Any answers are appreciated

I had the same brachial issue with C4,C5,C6 all herniated. You can recover but its a slow process (1-2 yrs) My left side is still smaller than the right and very apparent in my left tricep. Looking into getting an inversion table to help things decompress. When you train use iso lateral movements like dumbbells over barbells. This keep you from compensating on one side and more even development.

X2 on this. Chiropractic has definitely helped with pain management for me. Worth a visit!
Welcome to the forum! While I can truly appreciate you seeking out firsthand experience of people with similar trauma or ailments, I’d encourage you to stick with actual doctors and not some Internet unknown.
I mean, who the ____ am I? At least with a healthcare professional you have a face to go with the advice. And if you don’t like your doctor’s recommendation you can seek out another professional for a second opinion.
Sure, I guess the same applies with forums, buuuuut...Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Join Rx Muscle on Facebook!

Only is a big stretch.

From that article:
“Other possible causes of muscle weakness include paralytic shellfish poisoning, botulism, and low levels of potassium in the blood.”
O.o
Paralytic shellfish poisoning?
