Mr Alabama 2011
Congrats to Big Mike Phelps this past weekend for pulling off the HW and OA to become 2011 Mr Alabama. This is a prime example of the type legs necessary to win at the top NPC level. Awesome job to Mike and his trainer Mike Horn.

He's got some really good wheels! Nice, deep cuts and separation in his quads. In fact his entire body from head to toe is complete...and shredded!

A friend of mine down here who happens to be a national level judge always tells me that legs are often the difference. It also sends a message to the judges who was willing to pay the price. Alot of guys walk around the gym with 'flared lat syndrome" and they have chicken legs.......funny, really. I am tempted to alwways ask them if they found their legs cause I heard they were missing!

Its funny you say that Keith. I literally just posted something to that effect on facebook, but then deleted it before anyone could see it.
Most "gymrats" only train their strengths. They got big arms, that guy always wears a tanktop and is seen doing full body curls with weight he has no business even picking up! And "if" he has the nerve to train legs, it's doing quarter rep squats in the rack while serious lifters wait for him to get out of the way.
I am without a doubt the exact thing you talk about when the judges are looking for great wheels. Mine suck! It's not because I don't blast the hell out of them and it's not because I don't lift heavy, it's more a genetic thing, my quads are 9 miles long! But you can damn well take it to the bank I will be doing full front squats until they get bigger or break whichever comes first. I wont get back on stage until my legs catch up with my upper body. Mike Phelps was a great motivation that it can be done. That guy placed 4th in his class last year in that same event. The difference, his wheels. Nuff said.

Very true, have only judged locally but back and legs are generally tie breakers in a close show.
Mike looked great, agree with Kevin. Well deserved win.

Yea Mike, but with you I KNOW the judges take one look at you and know you bust your ass training by your conditioning and muscle quality. And your legs might not be where you want them ( whose ever is?), but they have to be pretty good or you wouldn't be winning class titles. I was talking about the guys that look like they are walking around on stilts, never train their legs, but think they are ready for the Olympia or something. I know you will do whatever it takes.

Your one of hardest working guys out there and your legs looks good. Like Keith said, you don't win titles with bad legs. Yes, we all have to work on our weaknesses but you got give credit where credit is due. Keep up the great work Michael!!!
