Air traffic glitch delays S. Florida flights
Fort Lauderdale arrivals delayed up to three hours
By Ken Kaye, Sun Sentinel
November 19, 2009
The Federal Aviation Administration said it has repaired an air traffic control flight planning system that lost power for about three hours Thursday, causing delays at Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Palm Beach international airports.
Some delays were longer than an hour in the Northeast.
At Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, departing flights were delayed up to 90 minutes and arriving flights were delayed up to three hours, airport spokesman Greg Meyer said. He couldn't immediately say how many flights were affected.
Because the delays could continue and worsen throughout the day, airport officials urged passengers to call their airlines to doublecheck their flight schedules.
The problem started at about 5 a.m., when an automated system that processes flight plans suffered an outage.
That forced controllers to manually input flight information into the FAA's computer system, spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said.
She couldn't immediately say where the problem occurred but narrowed it down to FAA complexes in Salt Lake City and Atlanta.
"We are investigating the cause of the outage," she said.
She added that none of the computer systems involving radar coverage or communications were affected.
"The FAA has contingency plans in place that allows the system to operate safety when we experience problems such as this," she said.
Steven Wallace, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, Miami Center branch, said the outage occurred at the worst possible time because it likely will impact flights all day long.
He estimated that about 100 flights were delayed at the Fort Lauderdale airport alone.
Wallace said when the automated flight plan process shuts down, it increases controller workload significantly.
"So as workload goes up, you're slowing down flights," he said.
