    Well, I figure since Curt dragged my journal up and it's late but I can't sleep yet I should fill y'all in on what's going on with me. In a nutshell, hopefully.

    I decided not to compete this spring. Maybe not this fall. Maybe never. I don't know.

    When I think back over the last 2 yrs, I see that I've spent 14 months dieting for 2 bodybuilding shows. When I'm not dieting I eat everything in sight because of the restriction of dieting. Bill Phillips said it best..."Dieting is like going underwater and holding your breath. Eventually you have to come to the surface, and when you do, you gasp for air and inhale all you can. It’s the same way with trying to go without eating. No matter how hard you try, eventually you’ll give in, and you’ll eat, sometimes even binge, gain weight and lose self-esteem."

    That's where I am. I don't know how to live a balanced healthy normal life anymore. There was a time when I did but now it seems like I'm either dieting in contest prep or eating everything in sight. Extremes. Name of my game. But it's not healthy and I need to change that.

    So that's why I haven't been around as much. I'm trying to balance my life a little more. Looking at career options, trying to not be such a food addict, figuring out what I want for my life.

    I trained with Sandra on Sunday during her "play" workout. It was the first time I was in the gym in over a week. Haven't been in since. Course it's only Monday (middle of the night). Not sure I'll be posting much in the way of workouts for awhile.

    A balanced life is great goal! I really don't see how you, and others, can go through so many prep cycles. Like you said, it can mess with you in so many ways.

    Speaking of working out...I have only been in the gym once in the last 3 weeks. It's been a nice break and while I still don't feel like lifting I know I need to get back. I want to drop 15 lbs before summer gets rolling.

    So I need some help. I don't know how to train. I've been doing the bodybuilding thing for so long in an effort to gain as much muscle as possible that I don't know how to train when muscle growth is not the priority. Yes, you heard it right...I don't want to build anymore muscle right now. I think I have plenty.

    I was thinking of doing 3-4 days a week of lifting, doing upper body days and lower body days. No crazy cardio. Maybe 20 min of HIIT. I know from doing both shows that diet truly is the key to weight loss so the 15 lbs will come off by eating clean and keeping calories in line.

    Opinions?

    Really GM? I thought you were kind of an expert around here, cause you've actually competed. I should be asking YOUR advice.

    But, your training wouldn't change, only your caloric intake. That'll determine whether or not you build muscle. IMHO.

    And do lotsa crazy cardio.

    I want some balance. I don't want to do the extremes anymore. Lately it seems like I'm either dieting hard or binging. I'm also not crazy about my weight fluctuating 30-40 pounds every year. I want to live in a body I'm comfortable with for awhile. I don't want a competition in my future. I just want to be healthier and more balanced.

    edit: I am no expert. I read a lot, listen, ask questions, learn, experiment, goof up, succeed, but I am by no means an expert.

    keep doing the workout split you have been doing just increase reps and drop the weight, add ss and maybe some plyos for a change up w leg training here and there.

    This is easy! With diet in check you can lift instinctively. Do whatever split and rep scheme you think your body is calling for at the moment. Cardio isn't needed at all. Have fun with it!

    Once you're down to where you want to maintain you have even more freedom. I've watched the guy who has trained me do this for a year. Every now and then he'll think he looks small, usually after not lifting for a month. Then he'll hit the weights, but never trying to get close to his old pr's, and within a few weeks he's looking big again. We talked about this last week. I told him he's reaping the benefits of all those decades of lifting and having mature muscle mass.

    I posted this over in Melissa's journal but thought it was appropriate to post here.



    I've been wrestling with my own visions for my body as a fbber. For the last 2 years I lived and breathed bbing. I got so used to seeing all the pics in posing suits that I forget to keep an eye on what I look like in clothes. Honestly, off season especially (which for me is the other 364 days of the year) I look like a fat little fireplug in clothes. Nothing looks good and girlie clothes (think lace/ruffles) I do look like a tranny. At least in the body.

    I got into bbing to build my body into something I love. To feel good and look good. But I don't now. Sure in a two piece suit in a bodybuilding venue, I look fine but in real life...not so fine. At least not to me. So I've decided to lose a little muscle along with some fat. I'm going to change priorities and instead of worrying about what I look like standing next to the next fbber on stage I'm focusing on what "I" look like every day in clothes. My new goal is just to look fit, healthy, and womanly sexy without being "big." My days of wanting to be big are over.

    Ironically, this has nothing to do with competing in the new WPD. I'm not sure I will ever compete again and even if I did, I'd still want to do bodybuilding, if it's still around. That's just based on the posing really. I'm not a fan of the new stuff...like no lat poses.

    Isn't this the reason why most of us women got into bodybuilding...to look good and feel good everyday. Good on you Girlymuscle for getting back to your roots. I support this decision.

    I can chime in a bit here cause I hear these comments every now and then from Lisa. She says the same things. She doesnt want to compete. She trains and diets with me just because it makes her feel good. I think there comes a time in ones life where we just stop and say, "enough already"

    The important thing is your health and as we mature staying on a balanced nutrition program is vital. I am so over the big and bulky thing. Staying leaner just makes you feel better about yourself, no matter what you are doing, BB'g or just being fit. It's a lifestyle for sure. So don't beat yourself up over it, just live it. If you slip, whatever, start over again.

    The one single thing that has helped us stayed "locked in" more than anything is re-feeds. No longer am I dieting for months on end. Now I diet for 6 days a week, very strict. On the seventh day all bets are off. It has improved our sanity but the magic, the metabolism goes thru the roof and we actually loose weight and stay leaner.
