The optimal part of the rhythms are at your peaks. Depending on houw long you sleep, you'll usually peak a couple of times throughout the day. It's usually not long after you wake up (that's why you get that groggy feeling, to being awake).
It is pretty much a dark art, because, there are so many variables, I could tell you when your gona peak, if I look up the charts and your sleeping pattern, but, there's no guarentee your going to feel at that optimum level you refered too. Diet, Sleep, Sunlight, they all play huge roles. There isn't a perfect answer to this question, but there are ways that you can help yourself out.
It really affects people who work shift work. It generally takes around a week for your bodies rhythm to reset itself (if you start sleeping at different times), so if your working shifts, it can actually be dangerous to your mental health, and they are actually suppose to be really careful about that nowadays. Anyway, here are a few pointers to try help out.
1) For a week, keep a body clock journal. Take a minute every few hours (every 2-3 will be best) to see how you actually feel, just stand or sit there, and see if you feel tired, groggy, mentally alert, physically strong, etc.
2) Look through this, and see where your natural peaks and troughs lie. If you've been able to do it every couple of hours, you should be able to see where your body is peaking, and where your low points are through the day.
3) Draw this up on a chart. Some of you may not feel this is neccessary, but a visual aid always helps me. Pin point your high and low points, and then draw in one smooth line, and this will show how your natural circadian rhythm works. From this chart, you can see when is best to train, when is best to sleep, when you will feel your best, etc, etc.

mmm i will die if i did anything on empty stomach but if it works for you keep doing it.
I know there was a strongman competitor who did just that. He had a feast before bed. Sleep then workout, then had his first meal. It might be Ahola or Magnus...who ever it was, his reason where very similar to yours.

I like to train mid afternoon, but I train late morning because the gym is not crowded.

This has been researched.
Its late afternoon up to the evening.
The ratio of katabolic to anabolic hormones is most optimal around this time.

I prefer to work out at peak time - I always feel like I lift more, like my body expects to be lifting at 6pm, BUT for comfort/lack of crowds I def like to hit it between 2-4pm when work allows.
