im really not a big fan of the smith machine...
it can be very dangerous. it locks you into an unatural position, and on pressing exercises you take the natural arc out of it.
be carefull of your shoulders i wouldnt recomend anyone using it. even machines are better as they are designed to follow a strength curve, the smith isnt, its just a bar that stuck in a straight line - no exercise follows are perfectly straight line

I can see where it might be conveneient in some instances but not that it would be advantageous for much other than safety on some things (although I'd opt for a power rack with pins) or variety. The fixed plane takes away some of the need to balance the weight (making it a movement in which you only control the path along a single plane), which would tend to reduce neuromuscular activation.

I've used it for bench press to neck in the past (to work upper pecs) since the safety of it keeps me from guilloitining myself, and i have a unique calf exercise I do on there, but thats about it.

I dig it. I still do most of my shit with dumbbells and barbells. I have been using it more since my shoulder surgery (torn labrum, sucked!!) and it's about the ONLY thing i trust anymore for shoulder presses. I just feel safer that way. I still do all my rehab shit so all those tiny little muscles around my tiny little delts keep up but i still don't trust free weights with my arms rotated that much.

I use it for barbell rows as I can target my back/lats and get a better pump/burn. However, I'll throw in heavy DB rows as well. I really like using it if I want to isolate a specific muscle group with a lot of weight and get a better pump. So, I'll use it once or twice a workout. Has proven to yield results for myself.

Question for you, there a slight inward angle to the one in my gym, do u stand inside or outside of it for your bb rows

agreed. I do DC as well and use it for alot of things since I train alone. I have access to a power rack but since I work out at a rec center and not a real gym I have to wait alot for guys doing BB curls in it. It's easier to just jump on the smith. I use it for declines, military press, reverse grip benches, squats and I've played around with using it for drag curls.

I dont' really get mad about it anymore, I just figure they don't know any better. I've been using a smith for awhile on alot of movements, even in the power rack I don't like doing heavy military press like movements by myself. I did them a few months ago and near the end of my rest pause set the weight drifted back, I couldn't drop it cause it would have landed on my head. I had to push it forward adn put it down but it torqued my shoulder pretty bad.

alot of it is convenience but alot of it is safety for me.
