A lot of new ones do. But like mentioned above, if I'm using one that is angled to a slight degree, I'll make it so I have the incline coming towards my torso instead of away from. You don't want it going away from you as it could could potentially cause some harm.

The only thing I'll use it for is upright rows every once in awhile when I don't feel like using a barbell. Most, if not all, of my workouts are free weights and dumbells.

Shoulder press and shrugs. That's it.
I use it for shoulder press because you can use heavier weight and keep it under control.
I use free weights for basically everything else.

Shoulder Press and Shrugs. I don't like it, but I can only go up to 30kg dumbells, that isn't because I can't press more, it's because I can't get the weight on to my damn shoulders.

Mixed in and out of our workouts... We also have a heavy weighted one, the bar is 85 pounds... So thats mixed in for close grip, occasional Incline bench, and front squat.

I might use it for barbell rowes, but that's the only time. I really don't like smith machine in general!

I started using it for flat bench after i tore my rotator cuff, ive always used it for squats however since i tore my acl a few years back, just makes me feel more secure.

Very surprised to see some many using the smith.
I myself use it for the neck press, for benching, and I perform my rack chins in there.
I did use it for squats for some time, but felt unusual stress at certain angles,I never got the hang of it.
It depends on your structure,if its effective and safe for you.
I also got subpar results with it,now I do free squats only.

I was once a big fan, then went to a Poloquin seminar and changed my view. I still have the diagrams of all the increased stress points in the joints and how there is no release pressure behind the knee so it chews up the knees. I had chronic shoulder and knee problems that forced me out of competition in 2006 after 22 years! In 2007 I went to the seminar and dropped all smith movements. I am now in traing for the NPC TU, IFPA Gaspari pro and IFPA Yorton Cup. I am pain free in my knees, lower back and delts. My be ancidotal but that was about the only change I made. And as a DC trainer it made workouts more of a challenge!! Anyway, do a google on Poloquin and smith machines and see his views just to get a opposit view point. I must also add that my pains were culmative and developed over 10-12 years of 80% smith work on my core exercises. If your doing 1-2 exercises a week and working in free bar and DBs I am sure your fine, just avoid over reliance.
