The arguments here are all valid. BCAA's are meant to SUSTAIN muscle gains. I find them ideal on a pre-contest diet or when your calories are lower. Personally, I use them during my workout.
In the off-season, use BCAA's sparingly and stick with whole foods and shakes/MRP. Like lilarnold and Triple-H said, you'll save a heck of a lot of money and see great gains.

Was told to when I was younger due to the healing factor at night and the effect that some bcaa's have with the protein synthesis in muscles. Not sure really... lol... made sense back then and it just became a habit. lol

I take 5 grams of BCCA's with 25g Dextrose both pre and post workout. I also take 5 grams of BCCA's upon waking.

I take Agent-M by Fusion Bodybuilding 45minutes pre workout as well as right after workout. Besides the BCAA's it also has 1000mg of arginine in!!! This stuff is great!

I take my BCAA
5g Morning (30 min before breakfast)
15g (start drinking 15 min preworkout and finish about 15 min before workout is over)
