As a former World Champion & multiple Olympic Gold medalist for 'The most inappropriate moment to make small talk to an attractive girl in a gym' I can only concur with many of the previous callers. It's all image mate and as has been said - time will sort it out. If you're regarded as a serious trainer the nods and acknowledgements will come in time. I tell you nothing is more amusing than a bloke virtually following a girl around the gym and straining to maintain her weights. Brilliant. Don't let that bloke be you. Best just to keep 'schtum' really. All the chicks make you feel like a pratt if you say anything stupid - just like the dating game except in the gym the other blokes are laughing too. Everyone sees everything in a gym. Laugh!

Hot girls get hit on A LOT. So they are probably used to brushing guys off. That OR maybe its just plain akward to have someone hit on you while your working out and theres other people around watching..?

I will talk to anyone who doesn't say stupid crap to me though I don't engage in long winded conversations between sets. So, if you're sounding like you're going to keep me a while you'll likely get an abrupt or rude response - depending.

I tend to be a bit standoffish because my gym is full of socializers. Some bring coffee. Seriously. There's one guy that comes in just to talk to people. I want no part of that! I don't want to give people the impression that I'm open to socializing during workouts so I really work to avoid engaging much with people. I actually don't enjoy being rude and I have to be sometimes because some people just don't get it. If you put me in a situation where I feel like I'm being rude that only pisses me off more.

That said, there have been a few guys I actually wanted to talk to me. If that's the case I'll give 'em the OK to chat it up - being in their space sans headphones, a smile, friendly eye contact. Something. The smart ones "get it".

I think it depends on the girl, because I about 6 months noticed a girl, and was timid and didn't talk to her bc of gym manners, but then mutual workout/cardio friends introduced us, that same girl is now my girlfriend and we actually go to the gym TOGETHER. So I'm pretty pumped. Just my 2 cents.

well from my experiences it seems like the women you're speaking of are pretty much there to train and thats it man. maybe one day they'll talk to you, but i would just let them be and let them do their thing. i know the last thing you want to do is get on bad terms with the people at the gym. alot of women dont like being hit on at the gym and they do exactly what you said, ignore you or are just plain mean. but some do think their &8%$ dont stink, and they think they're the last bottle of coke on this earth. just go to the gym, train and every once in a while say hi or give a smile man. one of them is bound to respond to you but dont try to hit on every hot girl you see either. good luck

Just Do Casual conversation befriend them then go from there.
that way you get to know if their worth bothering with at all.
