Great Article. I'm doing my qualifications in June (In this country it's the REP), and I want to the damn best trainer there is. I've got a lot of ideas I want to take and utilise in several fields over the next few years. More than anything I want to bring true weight training to the masses, and get everyone fit.
Whether this will work or not, well, we will see if you know my name in the next 10 years or so lol.

In 1980 before there were personal trainers I trained at the same gym that Bill Starr trained at.He had been S&C coach for a few colleges and even a pro football team.He had more knowledge than all the other guys in our gym combined. He never offered advice but if you asked he would spend an infinite amount of time helping you with your lifting questions.I saw people call him at the gym from all over the country with questions, some which had to seem trivial as Hell but he always answered them.Anyway where I`m going with this is I don`t know what Bill is doing today but before there was such a thing as a personal trainer I saw him give away a million dollars worth of training advice.I guess timing is everything.

I've always had a little daydream about going to Venice Beach and hiring Charles Glass for a weeks worth of workouts.

Great John. I was at that Mr. L.A. show where Jake took 5th in his class. It was amazing how fast he parlayed that into a van full of training parafenalia and was cruising Beverly Hills for in home clients. I was training at Brignoli's in Pasadena at the time. A community of yuppies eager to part with their cash. In no time 'who your trainer was' soon replaced who your CPA or attorney was during cocktail party small talk. A Brignoli trainer (we called them rent-a-friends) was bemoning why he could not attract clients. I told him he was not charging enough giving the perception he was not any good. He doubled his rates and soon was booked solid.

It is certainly a changed industry. I live up north in the shed of the US, so most people simply don't have the expendable income to do personal training. It is rare to see several certs and letters behind names, but those who do generally have the right mix of knowledge and attitude to truly help people.
I can certainly see the upward trend in training as more and more middle agers make the trek to the gym. All that said, we still only have 10 trainers in town who have a truly well-rounded understanding so they can make the proper approach to each person's situation.

Good read and I agree 100%...
unfortunately I know those swiss ball, kettle bell, band trainers all too well. They come up with some very pointless moves. But they are "different" and it lures them in nicely. I refuse to get on that level.Just doin' my thing.

interesting take by romano on 'bodybuilders' being humble enough to hire a personal trainer.
i assume many would more likely hire a nutritionist or dietician before a personal trainer.
