Inslin spike, oats vs banana
bhman says oats will cause a higher spike, true or false?

Depends on the type of oats (old fashioned, one-minute, etc.), how ripe the banana is, etc.
They are very close, oats are usually listed as slightly higher in glycemic index though (which would make bhman correct).
Was this really "poll-worthy"? Do you know not know about Google?www.ShelbyStarnes.com

Bananas are usually listed as 50-55 on the glycemic index.
Old fashioned oats I've seen anywhere from 48 to 70.
One minute oats are usually listed in the 80 to 90 range, sometimes even higher.
Remember though, once you combine any of these foods with a protein and/or fat source, you lower the GI considerably. Also remember to factor in glycemic load.www.ShelbyStarnes.com

Instant Oats GL
this states that the glycemic load of 100g of instant oats is 39, GI = GL *100 / Available Carbs (grams)
making the glycemic index of instant oats 5.73
GL=39 so 3900/68g carbs= 57.3
banana glycemic load
only 23g carbs per 100g banana so the load is different
gl=8 so....
800/23= 34.7
HOLY SHIT BANANAS ARE LOWER GLYCEMIC THAN INSTANT OATS WITHOUT FLAVOR??? no wonder im not ripped anymoreLive Free, Train Hard

I usually stick with whole food complex carbs because they keep you fuller for longer. A bit of fruit is fine though.
Like I said, once you add protein and/or fat to a meal you lower the GI substantially.www.ShelbyStarnes.com

Ya may or may not know but I've been a type 1 diabetic since i was 6 yrs old. The glycemic index was made for peeps like me.
But yeah the oats DEF require me to give MUCH (roughly double) more humalog when I eat a serving of roughly 40 grams of carbs

this could be the most good thread knowledge filled thread ever
when you say quick oats vs old fashion ... stupid question, the only difference is the cut, right? cause in both the only ingredient is OATS, so the cut makes that much difference? that seems high. I am not arguing, I just didn't realize it was that big of a difference. 90 is getting close to white bread.

So you could diet solely on bananas? Why do so many people eat bananas after a workout?
I can't imagine a sugary banana having the same GI as these organic oats I have, I don't won't believe it.

Well think about this: Bananas are mostly fructose when not quite ripe. But, once they are well ripe/starting to turn they are mostly dextrose (I could have that wrong, but it's a simple quicker digesting sugar). So, if they are starting to brown they are going to spike insulin much more than if they are just turning yellow/slightly green.

Yea im startin to get a lil confused. You're telling me oats are 80-90 on the glycemic index, wtfff, i dont believe it. Gotta agree wit youngguns bout i dont see how a sugary banana can not spike insulin more then my boring plain oats.
What about ezikiel bread, the label says its glycemic index is 36, is that wrong too lol??
