Not with Nathan going down for the year. They cannot replace him unless they make some kind of major trade.

Eh, I think everyone is blowing Nathan's injury out of proportion, I mean he was a great closer, but I really think Rauch will step up to the plate in the closer role. Also I think by adding a solid SS and 2nd and now a power hitter to our bench, will make up for the the loss of Nathan.

Hes one of the best in the game. That would be like Mariano going down.

Early season losses shouldn't be cause for alarm, especially considering the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry of 2009, though it appears after one game that Joe Girardi has some figuring to do. In any case, no matter who's pitching, it seems these Yankees-Red Sox games seem to come down to the bullpens, and on this night, that was enough to make you ask: Chan Ho Park? He's the guy you want in the game holding a 7-5 lead in the seventh inning? Wasn't David Robertson supposed to be the next big thing in the Yankee bullpen? ... Hey, it's only one game, but it's not the way the Yankees wanted to start a defense of their championship, blowing a big lead against their archrivals, and the worry is that when the bullpen becomes an issue, it tends to stay an issue

The Oakland A's hit more home runs than only three other teams in all of baseball last season. Jack Cust led the team in 2009 -- for the third straight season -- with 25 homers.

Thus, it only stands to reason that when Cust was informed he was being released by the A's, he'd be a little peeved. Fortunately, for entertainment purposes, Cust wasn't shy about his feelings.

"I think it's messed up," Cust told Susan Slusser on the phone. "They're going to go on 50 at-bats after three years of what I've done here? It's ridiculous. A lot of other guys have had bad springs. This is a joke."

"The fact is, this team has no power and they've just released a guy who [averaged 28 homers] the last three years," he continued. "That's amazing."

John Bowker won the job to be San Francisco's starting right fielder.
Bowker beat out Nate Schierholtz after a big spring, and manager Bruce Bochy made the announcement Sunday as the Giants set their roster for opening day Monday at Houston.
"I worked hard this spring training and felt I put myself in good position," Bowker said. "I'm ready for the season to start. I was able to go out there and drive in some runs and help the team win some games, and I think that's what they were looking for."
Second basemen Freddy Sanchez and Emmanuel Burriss and outfielder Fred Lewis were placed on the 15-day disabled list.
